Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Recommendation for Soft Crate
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 23.02.11 08:04 UTC
I am looking at purchasing a soft crate to take to shows so my girl can stay close to me yet stay clean and calm.  There seem to be so many on the market and huge range of prices.

Can anyone recommend a good strong one for a GR?

Thanks

A couple of people have recommended Splendid pets soft crates the deluxe type - had I gone for a soft crate I would have gone for one of these but decided to get a lightweight metal crate for safety reasons - am buying a foldable sack trolley to make it that little bit easier to get it to the showgrounds!

36" Splendid pets would be the size to go for your GR would think.

i have the petsmate,  no poles, doesn't tip over ( seen others that do)  easy to packaway   and carry

If you think your dog may scratch at it then you are better of getting a lightweight metal cage. What i did with Razzle is had it up in the lounge when from he was younger so he got use to it & now at shows he sits in it with his head popping out of the top!

I bought a Maelson soft crate last year, having looked at what seemed like dozens of other options; most of them were substantially cheaper, but I LOVE this crate. I bought a fairly huge one and all three of mine can get in there (our oldest boy comes to shows whenever practical for his 'day out' with the gang)--it gets a bit interesting sometimes when we have consecutive classes and the two that want to come out are not the one you need to take into the class :). You can see it here:

They are really well made, have anchor points and are great for what they do in providing a nice warm, quiet place for your dog at a show (I've been tempted to climb in myself once or twice, I can tell you). I use it a lot when we go camping if I want to cook or load up the tent--but the drawback is that if you want to groom your dog beforehand you haven't got that convenience of standing him/her on a board on top of a metal crate.

Soft crates are great until your dog works out how to open the zips, so I would suggest fastening the zips together with a trigger clip, pin or small padlock.

:) that was one of the features on the Maelson crate that I particularly liked
