Hello

Ok so here is a typical case of a BYB pup .
My dad has purchased a puppy , it is his first and wasnt worried about KC reg or pedigree (they mean nothing to him just wanted a pup to love and walk with)

Anyway he popped round on his way home with his new baby , now he is very small I would say no older than 5 wks old I asked what the house was like where he came from he said it was dirty cats and dogs in cages didnt see mum and dad , you can imagine the rest .

The said pup has now shown signs of worms , he has been to the vet yesterday and was given half a tablet and all last night and through the early hours he has had live worms coming out of his bum and mouth so shows how bad he actually has them . The vet has said this is a good sign as it shows the medication is working but I wonder because they are live does he need more ?

And would you make up some puppy formula or evaporated milk to feed him to give him a bit of a better start or continue with solids ? we picked up a bag of pro alergenic puppy beta and some wet food to make it a little easier for him .

Any advice on how to give this tiny pup a better start ?

My pups always have pasturised goats milk with an egg yolk, lightly warmed at approx 6am and then again at approx 6pm, I still give the odd treat to adult dogs too, pups don't need milk anymore once weaned so it is pure indulgence, but if the pup needs building up it will help enormously. :-)

The vet hopefully has made another appointment for the pup in approx 2 weeks to see how he is, if not tell your dad to make a follow up and the vet will decide on what to do, new born pups need worming every two weeks, so it obviously hasn't been done, but if wormer is used regularly now there will be no ill effects (touch wood) there are different wormers vet prescribed are the only ones to kill all types of worms and eggs so only use these, don't bother with any in the supermarkets.

Why do people still buy from places like this? Nothing gets through does it? Hope the pup will be fine, get your dad to buy a good quality complete puppy food too the pup needs quality to help set him up well.

Best of luck.

Thanks Ill let him know about the goats milk.

I guess nothing gets through to people who do not actually go on sites like this or use the internet regularly , whilst there are still people in the world with hearts and they come upon a situation like this sometimes there hearts take over and they want to do their best to take puppy out of the terrible situation it is in . Lets face it , someone has too god only knows what would happen to them otherwise ?

I have reported the address to the rspca so they can investigate further .

That's exactly the point.  Everytime someone parts with their money and takes a puppy out of this situation, then these people will do it again.  If the puppies didn't sell, then they wouldn't bother to produce them.
You might save one puppy but you prolong the whole business.

I do hope you can help this little pup grow into a fit healthy adult. As has been said a good quality food will be what it needs. I would be inclined to add a little wet food to a good kibble, something like chappie and maybe Beta or orejin or arden grange. Steer him away from the supermarket brands as they are not often the best. Pesonally I would not give milk as pups really do not need it but it probably will do no harm if it deos not upset his tummy. I would be feeding a raw diet but that is not for the first timer so a complete kibble is best. Pup will need worming again in 2 weeks and every 2 weeks untill about 16 weeks then once a month till 6 months then every 3 months untill adult the vet will advise you on this and on a continuing program for life.
Unfortunalty by purchasing these poor pups the practice is just perpetuated. I would like to see the goverment ban the sale of any puppy except from the premesis where it was born and bred. Cut out all sales from dealers and pet shops, stop the advertizment of pups for sale on websales sites and the practice of delivering by a third party. I have no problem with breeders having web pages but I hate the "Puppies for Sale" sites. If everyone had to collect a new pup from these places and actually see what went on maybe more would realize how awfull it was. Maybe I live in hope!

Oh dear you have to make the best of a very bad start, others have given advice regarding the food etc make sure you feed the little one often not in huge meals.

Oh the poor puppy.  sounds like it also needs lots of TLC.  i've never heard of worms coming out of the mouth before and like you, thought a good vet wormer would at least disable them.  Maybe someone will be able to answer that for you.

Like everyone esle has said, people should walk away from these places.  If you want to help them call the dog warden/RSPCA or dogs trust.  That way the ratbag puppy farmer does not benifit by getting any money and a fine to pay.  It doesn't sound like the pups had any help at all.  At least its safe now and hopefully will get the start in like it needs.

When we got our JR she was riddled with worms as was her brother...both had worms coming out of thier mouths and bums...the man we got them off had had a litter of 8 and these were the last 2, he was selling them at £20 each. They were so sad, they had been kept in the bath as his gf couldnt stand the mess and he said if they didnt go that night then he was going to drown them, but if I wanted them I could have them for £10 each... I took both there and then, I couldnt leave them...we kept our Lucy and my friend took Milo..both are nearly 10 and the happiest little dogs going. We got Panacur paste from our vet to give to them, which was easier than trying to give a 6wk old puppy a tablet. Good food little and often and lots of TLC will hopefully help your dads poor pup. Thinking of you:)
