How much should i walk my Frenchie girl?
Mable is 12 weeks old and on her 1st walk i did to the end of my street and back... 150 meters total. I have continued this on a daily basis and it doesn't phase her... So when should i extend? her breeder advised once fully grown walk her no more than 1 mile per day... I feel that she could do that now easily. So i am asking for advise as i want to do this correctly. I know to start little and build up, ut just how far on a cool day could i walk her... Thanks in advance

No idea on distance but a good rule of thumb is 5 minutes per month of age, 2 or 3 times a day - so at 3 months old, 15 minutes twice a day would be fine.

I know of a frenchie breeder who gives his dogs a lot more than one mile a day - that's a very small amount, at a decent walking pace it's only 15 minutes.  Never mind the exercise itself, walks are great for mental stimulation as well - I do hope your girls' breeder does stuff with them at home or they will be rather bored!

As they are not a large breed i wouldnt think to restrict exercise too much. My boy is 20 weeks old now and we go for half and hour ish? Baring in mind this length of time has been built up and only been this long on the past week. Due to him not liking walking and refusing to budge. After alot of practice coaxing and treats he happily trots along my side. He also isnt phased by a thing. After we get home he has a good drink and then runs round like a loon thats on E numbers.

At this age it's all about socialisation not exercise so I'd expect that you would sometimes walk to the end of your street, sometimes travel to new places, go and visit people, cows, car parks etc but be careful with distance and time spent up and about.  Puppies can fool you into thinking they are ready for more as they can be very enthusiastic about life but do remember you still have a very young pup, who will need you to be careful on her behalf!  The rule of 5 minutes of on-lead exercise per month of life up to 12 months (some breeds differ) is a good one and it pays to be cautious.

Are you going to training classes yet?  These are fantastic at knocking your pup out and prove that brain training (periods of concentration) are very tiring.  I found with both of mine (gundogs) a 1 hour training class sent them back to bed for hours!!

Practise lead walking and recall in the garden, do sits whilst waiting for the kettle to boil, short sessions throughout the day will help a lot to keep your puppy engaged and busy. Make a checklist or look online at the puppy socialisation checklists and take your pup out and about to experience new things each day.  Due to bad weather I spent a bit of time in the garden centre with my latest pup.  I popped him in the trolley on a bit of fleece and we went for bone shaking rides round the car-park.  He inspired devotion in old ladies, and charmed the Christmas department by ogling their displays :)

Hi and congrats on getting a Frenchie! :D

When mine were pups, I always used the 5 minutes per month rule which meant a 15 minute walk around the block - at times they would step in front of me and ask to be carried for a while but after a week they were happily trotting the whole block. Once they were a little older we progressed to 2 blocks - we called them the long walk and the short walk! ;) As well as the pavement walking, we would take them to woods, fields, shopping, anywhere there were people and dogs.

When fit, Frenchies can walk far more than just a mile ( there are even a few who do agility!) - just remember to build up gradually and watch the weather too. Never walk them in the heat of the day, so early mornings/late evenings are better in summer - have you felt the heat of a pavement in summer? Very cold weather can sometimes affect their breathing too so be careful. Heat is a very big worry for Frenchie owners and sometimes you may have to use a fan and a wet towel to cool your frenchie.

Most Frenchie owners I know, use a harness for walking ( I use puppia ones but there are many others and lovely leather ones too) - less pressure on their delicate trachea - collars can cause coughing and gagging especially if they pull! If Mable starts to gag often on a walk and spit up lots of saliva - get your vet to check for elongated soft palate.

Owning a frenchie is a laugh a minute, you will have lots of fun with your girl :)
