Topic Dog Boards / Health / Blisters on muzzle !
- By Daisy [gb] Date 30.12.02 14:07 UTC
Have just noticed that our pup has about 6/7 small red blisterlike spots just above her nose on her muzzle. They are now bleeding. Weren't there first thing this morning. Has anybody an idea what they are or what may have caused them ?

Could she be 'nosing' at something and getting pricked?
- By ALI.C [gb] Date 30.12.02 14:23 UTC
Hi Daisy
My boxer pup had something very similar a couple of weeks ago. But they were under her chin. They disappeared within 2 days. Although they didnt ever bleed. Hope they disappeaar like Ruby's.

Thanks for the replies. She does ferret around in hedges etc - so could have been stung ? They seem to have come up suddenly tho'. Difficult to tell if they are anywhere else - she has a very thick coat :) Will keep an eye on them and down the vets tomorrow if they aren't looking any better.

Has she had her nose in an ants nest or something like that ??

How old is she? Could it be puppy eczema? Just a thought, I've had it in very young puppies where they have stuck their chins in "Rice Pudding" and not licked it off the chin. Another thought is stinging nettles although I would have thought it was a bit late in the year for that. Ant's nest? Again a bit late but something along these lines could be the answer.

Regards, John

Don't think that she has been in an ants' nest. If you saw my other thread she ate food put out for the foxes this morning by our neighbour. He sometimes adds medicine for them - can't think that would cause it though. She hasn't had anything like this before. The spots are starting to get a crust on them - they are raspberry coloured some about the size of a very small pea.

Many thanks for the replies

Could they be acne?
- By steve [gb] Date 30.12.02 16:59 UTC
Could it be a reaction to whatever your neighbour added to the food ( was it a carcass ??)-if your pups had her nose stuck into it ,could be a local reaction ....are there any more spots appearing ?

There are about seven or eight now - they are a bit pussey (sp.? don't want to put pussy :D ) but no more for a while. Looks a bit like a squashed blackberry on her nose :) Could be a reaction as they appeared so suddenly.

And maybe bathe with cooled, boiled water (with a bit of sea salt mixed in, if you have it) if you think the pus is because of infection? Dry with a paper towel.

Could it be acne? I have heard of dogs getting that. I have also heard of dogs getting sores on their muzzle from plastic dishes (thats if u use them try stainless steel).
ttfn :)

Several years ago my bitch got these on her muzzle - extensive vet investigations proved nothing, and she grew out of them, with no scarring. Hope your dog is the same.

Hi
Have looked into skin problems a great deal and young dogs can get teenage spots which look like a human spot they come as quickly as they go these are always on the muzzle area.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The spots are raw this morning and so will bathe them again. She has a stainless steel bowl so can't be the plastic bowl idea. Will be down to the vets if they don't start clearing up by Thursday.

A friend swears by using Aloe Vera gel on skin things for her dogs - anyone any experience of this ?- I have some but haven't used it on the dogs yet.

Thanks for all the help :)

Daisy

Forgot to say that she is 8 months :)

Never heard of doing that but after u wash them u can try some polysporin, this may help some and keep them clean, u could also put some hydrogen peroxide (sp) to clean out any infection after u wash the area.

I use Aloe Vera gel on the dogs, but be careful, on your dogs spots it should be fine, but on a deep wound you have to be careful the aloe vera does not heal over the wound too quickly :-)

Thanks for all the advice - the spots look pretty ugh this morning - pussey - but no more spots. Will try the Aloe Vera. She is otherwise fine, but may have just eaten some more turkey bones that were in the hedge near where yesterday's were left :( Daughter couldn't get through the hedge to stop her and her recall is not at the best when she is eating :( Thought that all the bones had been picked up yesterday. Have rung the vet - who has said that she will probably be OK - but to keep a close eye on her and ring if any problems.
