Sorry Loribeth

can you just clarify what breed you have?? You say cocker spaniel firstly, but then say both are ckc., to me ckc stands for Cavalier King Charles (?)

Regards

I read the ckc as being Canadian Kennel Club perhaps Loribeth could clarify it for us.

Well, I was nearly right!!!

I would suggest that you wait until your bitch is at least 2yrs old and has had all the relevent health tests - Dessie, JaneS or Pammy will be able to tell you which ones Cockers should have (I should know but can't remember!!).

Depending on which country you're in you'll also need to consider whether there's a local vet who'll dock the puppies tails, if you want them done, as some areas are pretty much void of vets who'll dock pet litters (assuming you're breeding 'show' cockers not 'working' ones).

Just found my book with the health test info in!! and it says that Cockers should be tested for PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), and ideally Hip Dysplasia and Familial Nephritis as well - all these tests should be done before breeding. It also recommends avoiding any bitches/stud dogs with any suspected incidents of Rage Syndrome in their histories. Also, don't forget to check that your bitches registration isn't endorsed to prevent the registering of any puppies she may have - more an more pups are sold this way and a lot of people have been caugt out with this.

Apologies if you already know all of this - but this info is bound to be useful to someone!!!!

The Continental KC is a US registry so I think Loribeth may be talking about what we call American Cocker Spaniels. Same principles about average age for breeding as in English Cockers but the main genetic problem with American Cockers is hereditary cataract so it's vital that both parents are tested for this problem on an annual basis from 12 months old.
