I've just read something that's puzzled me; someone whose puppy was registered individually after leaving the breeder a few weeks later had its registered name changed to something completely different - I didn't know that was possible.

Please could someone more 'in the know' tell me if I'm right or wrong before I make an ass of myself!

Hi, I read your post with interest.........I am waiting for KC paperwork for my puppy ( that's another issue - read the forum !) but I too have a specific name I would like to give my puppy but I am unsure if I can do this........please advise. I am so new to this that I too don't want to appear like a total idiot !
- By kayc [gb] Date 15.02.11 19:29 UTC
A registered name can be changed within 12 weeks of 1st registration. Only the breeder can do this, the new owner cannot.  I have done it once.
- By Nova Date 15.02.11 19:43 UTC
Shame Kimbo, don't think you will be able to change yours.
- By Kimbo [gb] Date 15.02.11 20:03 UTC
Thanks.........it just appears that this breeder has managed to screw me over again.....I can't get paperwork out of him after 9 weeks so doubt he will change the name !

If someone buys a KC registered puppy that has their own Affix, they can add it to the end of the original name.  So for example they buy a pup registered as 'Champdogs superstar' and they have their own affix which is 'internet' they can then change the pups name to 'Champdogs Superstar of Internet'  There is a specific list of link words such as: OF AT TO IN BY VIA FOR DEL VON VOM CUM MIT WITH OVER AVEC FROM AMONG UNDER BETWEEN

The only other reason that a registered name can be changed is only by the breeder, and for these reasons only:
a) The breeder misspelt the name
b) The breeder did not specify the name requested by the owner
c) The breeder did not give an alternative name and initial the box to
prevent The Kennel Club selecting a name
d) The Kennel Club choice of name is not considered acceptable.

You don't have to use a linking word though. :)
- By Vanhalla [gb] Date 15.02.11 20:28 UTC
"Av" is a common one in our breed, as it is Norwegian for "of".  One of my dogs uses this word to link his original registered name to my affix.
- By Nova Date 15.02.11 20:34 UTC
I've got two of and a cum, remember when I first mentioned this on CD the Moderator accused me of using a rude word but it is one listed by the KC and as my dog had a Celtic name it seemed to fit best.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 15.02.11 20:34 UTC
An owner of one of my pups changed it as she didn't like the KC name I gave, but I of course had to agree to it.

Similar reason here Diane... puppy owner came to collect pup, I told her what her puppy's name was just before signing form, and she cried.. literally... The name I had given was the pet name for her old dog she had recently lost... I felt terrible... I explained I could change the name, she was delighted.. she went home with puppy, I phoned KC for change of name papers.. and name was changed within two weeks...

It must however, be done within 12 weeks of original registration...

Since then, I have encouraged my puppy owners to help choose their pups registration name, within my chosen theme.

When I name my pups, alot of thought goes into it & I'm affraid I would not change a name of a puppy I had named but no-one has asked me to anyway.
- By kayc [gb] Date 15.02.11 21:27 UTC
Lexy, a lot of thought goes into all our pups names, this one was not destined for the showring, so I had no problem with changing the name.. but the new name was still within keeping of my theme.. I did choose the new name, but they had input...

Most of my pups now have names with input from new owners.. sometimes from a list I have already drawn up... but on occassion, an owner has given me a cracking name which I had never thought of... an owner/member on CD springs to mind, from the Russian litter  :-)

I wasnt aiming my post at you specifically kayc, just making a reply.

That story surprised me -if it had been me I'd have been DELIGHTED and seen it as a sign that this was the right puppy!
- By kayc [gb] Date 15.02.11 22:06 UTC
I suppose you could see it that way Marianne.. I didn't at the time..

I remember when I collected my Megan.. paperwork had not come back from KC.. and when I did receive them she came back as Craigour Kay :-)  That was a sign lol

After seeing these replies, it's just dawned on me that I never vary, and have always used for and my affix.
- By helensdogsz Date 15.02.11 22:39 UTC
I used Over for one of mine and think that was a mistake as she takes it literally and thinks she is above all the other dogs!
I did change one of my names as the people requested a specific name, then returned the dog within the week so I renamed her to a name that fitted in with my litter theme.

I am due to add my kennel name onto the end of 3 of my dogs names and I cant decide on the joining word...I think I am going to use "at" but would have liked a difference but oh well.

I picked my first bitch's name which everyone always tells me its so nice and got my kennel name to fit her name which works great.
My 1st male came from a breeder who didnt have a affix and his name was already picked by the time we got him.

My newest addition, well the breeder told me that I could help pick my pups name but she wanted "moon" at the begining to go with who the litters father was. So I picked the nicest name I could think of with "moon" at the start and we got it.

I would never expect a breeder to allow me to pick a name however my bitch's breeder wanted me to pick it so I did.

I have of and for and also with no joining word.

same here, and with using names in another language I doublet most new owners would find an appropriate name in the letter I want.

Ask the average pet owner what their dogs registered name is and they won't know, but it is often important to the breeder.

when I picked my pups (breeder is a friend) I had 2 names in mind for their KC names as I had recently lost my young nephew (still keeping breeders theme ). My breeder named them for registration and microchipping before their hearing test but didn't use the names I wanted to use in case the hearing test results forced me to change my choice of pups thus loosing my choice of names. She had agreed to sign the paperwork for the change of name and I took it with me when I collected the pups. It all went quite smoothly. I got my first choice of puppy but my OH's was unilaterally deaf so he had to go for his second choice. After the registering into our names, we changed their KC names and then once that paperwork was back we added our affix.

I always thought this was a specific list, as above, but one kennel I have noticed seems to pick words that aren't on, or in a similar vein, to this list.

...and those owners who show their dogs.  I felt very privileged to be allowed to choose my dog's names, subject to breeder advice and approval of course

Have rules changed recently then?  About 5 years ago my Black pug boy came with an absolutley awful name.  As he was a gift I had had not previous contact with the breeder (long story not relevant here)  As he developed it became apparent he was a very nice boy indeed and I wanted to have a go at showing him but was reluctant to enter him in his registered name, the KC sadi that for a £50 fee and with the agreement of the breeder the name could be changed, so I contacted the breeder, grovelled and apologised for not liking her name, sent her the form to sign, and name change came through within a few days.

Before I started showing I knew both my English and Irish girls full names - Jazz - Wynacre Minuet - the breeder asked what her pet name was and guess choose a name to link to that?  Sacha - Redsleeves Clever Clogs and I felt she really did live up to that name despite being an Irish scatty Setter as everyone said.

Aside from Max I have had input to all the names - even if choosing from a list of suggestions.  Charlies name wasn't accepted so we had a second choice but the breeder was more than happy to change if we wanted too.

I love KC Names that have a theme behind them - must take ages to do!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.02.11 11:59 UTC
I think it must have, as I remember a Kanix Bouvier bitch being shown and doing really well under one name and then it changing to another.

Changed how? you did it 5 years ago and I did it last year?
sorry if I'm being simple :-)
