Topic Dog Boards / Health / Very poorly girl today
- By Merlot [ir] Date 13.02.11 13:46 UTC
I have a poorly girly today. Last evening OH and I went to a B/D party for about 3 hours, all girlies fine when we left, came home about 11.30 as I was off to a show today so needed to be sensible!! to find Merlot collapsed on the floor, very hot and in great apin. I thought it may have been a torsion but when I got her to stand no sign of that but obvious high temp and she had rigors and could not stand for longer than a moment, she just collapsed and was shuddering...I thought she was dying in front of my eyes.  Sods law we had both had a drink so I pounded on a neigbours door and he took us to the vet. We scanned her for a poss pyo..not that, no sign of gastric problem but her chest is rattly it appears she has Pneumonia. She has a temp of 105 and so started IV ABX and pain relief, I (slept) on the floor next to her all night (What was left of it) It was 4am before she stoped shaking and this morning as a little better but still a very ill girl. Back to vet today for more ABX and P/R temp now 104 and able to stand a little.  She is usually such a lively happy girl and it is awfull to see her so ill, please give her a though today. Thanks...in typical dog style when OH went to take the others out for a walk she struggled to her feet and looked hopefull, bless her.

Oh dear poor girl. All paws and fingers crossed she makes a quick and full recovery x
- By suejaw Date 13.02.11 13:50 UTC
Oh Sh*t!!!! Poor Merlot and poor you having to see her like this and not be able to do anything more than you are..

Oh heck these dogs really do put us through this. What brings this on in a dog? Is it the same as in a human?

Please keep us updated of her progress and if you need anything Aileen, anything at all i'm at the end of the phone and also off tomorrow if you need to me to come down to you xxx

Fingers and paws crossed here for Merlot and a complete speedy recovery

How awful for you. Hope your girl is feeling better today, the antibiotics usually take a day to kick in so she should begin to feel better soon.

poor all of you! what a shock to come home to, but it sounds like she is making short work of her recovery if she's hoping to get out with her gang. Big hug for her and a tot of something strong in coffee for you I think :)!

Thanks for all your good wishes for Merl. Have had a long chat with My vet today about what caused it and we seem to have reached an explanation.

On Sat we had a lovely walk by the river and Merl found a nice big dinasaur (Big Knuckle bone...bovine!) bone in the river which she carried about for 5 mins as they do!!! My vet seems to think it had some spoores on it which aggravated her lungs and being bactierial as opposed to viral they got a hold very fast. These things do by all accounts ? They set up a huge infection and her temperature shot up to 105 in a matter of hours, hence the rigors and collapse. Beth (Vet) thinks that if we had gone to bed as usuall at 11pm (We did not get home till later) the temp would have continued to rise and she would have very soon started fitting and if so we could have had a very different outcome... (I am soo pleased we came home early...if there had been no show on Sunday we may have been out a lot later) Because we shot off immediatly to the vet and they got a huge dose of IV anti-biotics into her it stopped the bactieria dead and so she recovered very fast. She has just had the all clear from Beth lungs back to normal and temp back to normal. It could all have been so much different. the angels were watching over her on Sat night. Glad it was not Granny Pepsi who found the bone...she is 9 on Sat and obviously not so fit as her daughter

So the moral of the story DO NOT  PICK UP MANKY BONES GIRLS...Please!

Dogs 'eh...who'd av'em ???

Thank goodness you came home when you did--and as for the manky bones, I was watching my youngest dog playing with a friend's welshie the other week. They were tearing about the field with something I couldn't identify in her mouth. It looked like a clothes peg, quite brightly coloured...until they came running up to show off the find, and we discovered it was a duck's foot. At the time we didn't think that much of it and just took it off them, but I won't be so complacent next time.

I,ve just seen this so glad Merlot is feeling better what a horrible shock for you both.
