Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Bitch absorbed pups

Hi Guys,

Just come back from having my bitch scanned and it looks like she has absorbed them around day 19, there are still some sacks inside her.

What causes this and is there any advice for next time to try and avoid this happening again or is it just one of those things.

I've not had this happen before on my previous bitches so feel abit disheartened.

Thanks for any advice x

How far would she be now?

I had this happen once before my girl was scanned as having 8, at 5 weeks no heart beats detected, she delivered 5 mummified pups the rest were reabsorbed.

Did you use the CHV jab?  Maybe worth thinking about if you decide to breed from her again.   We didn't use the jab, but did breed from our girl again and she went on to have a healthy litter of 8.

Hi, she would have been 4weeks,  she and the stud dog were both maiden dogs and are both mine.  Didn't consider the CHV for this reason, but maybe consider it next time.

Thanks

CHV is not (just) sexually transmitted but can be transmitted in saliva and from any dog-dog contact.

This i didn't know and ruled it out using it as i knew their history.

Sorry to hear about your pups, I can't offer any other except I've not heard of this, the whole litter. The only thing maybe is did she get stressed or feel threatened by anything, I've been on eggshells thinking the slightest thing can do it, I'm sure it would have to be fairly stressful for it to have an impact.
I'm dreading scanning as I fear this at the moment.

Reikiangel - Just had my bitch scanned, and left it really too late to tell numbers, because I was also worried she would reabsorb (due to the scan).  Ann the scanner said it is really a myth that such trivial things can make them reabsorb, and minor upsets would have no effect.  28 days is the best time to see numbers on a scan, and I was about day 37, so each pup was too big to get any sort of count.

It must be so upsetting when the bitch absorbs.

We are 1 week in post mating and keeping our fingers crossed.
We've read their are not really any signs to look out for, is this correct?

It's such a shame no one's invented a pregnancy stick like us humans have!

Reasons for absorbing are probably as little understood as the reasons for human pregnancy failing in the first 3 months,a dn probably similar reasons apply.

Inefficient placenta, insufficient hormone levels to maintain pregnancy etc.

In canines thought it is the middle trimester that is the implantation stage when the placenta is established, and morning sickness may occur, in humans it is the first stage.

Interestingly it is at these stages that potential offspring seem to be lost most often.

That's reasuring to know, thanks.

i did bite the bullet and we have one reabsorbing but other wise ok.

I have had a bitch reabsorb 2 whole litters, she has now been speyed. I saw a fertility specialist who said that in her case it was probably lack of correct hormones that prevented the pups from attaching to the womb. She had seasons only 17-19 weeks apart, though some bitches can have litters from such short periods. It is heaqrtbreaking, and you feel that you could have/ should have done something to prevent it, but I have come to the conclusion that nature knows best.

Totally true in my experience.  And not just trivial things.

One of my mated bitches was attacked by a larger dog on about week 3.  She was seriously injured, and needed surgery.  There was no question, I just accepted that the pregnancy would be halted.  She needed a full GA and I was just worried about her.

I honestly didn't expect any pups, but she whelped 2 little ones at the normal time.  Usual size litter for the breed.

Miracles do happen!  :-)

If you remember, I posted on here earlier about my bitch getting caught on an electric fence and getting a nasty shock (at about 3 weeks in), and that I was really worried that this would have upset her enough to make her reabsorb or affect the 'pups'.  Having the scan has put my mind at rest a little now...

Hi, My other bitch was 3 weeks post mating when she undergone a GS, xrays and medication, she had a perforated intestine and had to have a bowel resection, by some miracle she delivered 7 healthy pups.  Even the vet was surprised!

So I don't think trauma has anything to do with absorbing pups, sadly, i just think it is one of those things just like humans
