Hi All,

Just wondered if I could have some opinions please on what everyone uses to Worm and flea/deflea and how often?

I use Milbemax for worming and was using Frontline for flea side of things however have read that the little buggers are becoming immune to it.

I have always added Flea Safe garlic to my dogs feed but Im not sure if this is sufficient enough for preventing fleas?!

All opinions greatly appreciated :)

I use Panacur suspension for pups and pregnant/nursing bitches, and Drontal for adults for worming.

I do not ever routinely use anything for fleas.  I have a houseful of dogs, and think I've only ever found a couple in over 5 years.  I just blast the offender with Frontline spray if I find one.  I never, ever use spot ons.

I use garlic everyday...and drontal wormer...thornit around the ears and feet when grooming , have used frontline in the past but not anymore...have a spray handy just in case I need it. I have a very long thick coated breed which need regular grooming so it is easy to check the coats as I do.

I have frontline spray too - as it can be used on my cat & dog both. I don't see the need for monthly treatments at all.

My home is also treated with a home treatment such as Acclaim (£13.47 in Boots chemist) which prevents fleas breeding - THAT is the key to flea control as they don't breed on the animal, they hop off and take over your soft furnishings. Other similar sprays are Indorex or Skoosh (but the latter has not had much positive review).

Worms were less frequent til I moved to a more rural area, now it's every 3 months strictly. I found an online site which does a special package for a year's worth of wormers (Cestem, which is a new type but as good as any other) and ordered them on New Year's Day! But will worm more frequently if I see evidence of infestation (as I would with fleas). I also worm & deflea my cat every time I do my dog/s - you have to as they can re-infect each other.

I don't breed dogs or cats, but have had cats for over 25 years and lived with dogs a great portion of my life - and the regime I have now I own both, works.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Another reason I'm reluctant to use another spot on is that the site where you put it my girl has gone bald and theres no sign of regrowth! :(

I think I'm going to stick to my garlic and may try the prevention in the house.

Thanks again :)

Starryeyes - sorry if I'm sounding like a plank here :D but do you use Thornit as a preventative? Or to actually treat? (I just did a quick google as never used it before)

hi k9-em I use thornit as a preventative for mites in the ears and feet and a treatment if required (rarely) for the ears after cleansing.
I also like jean use acclaim in the home.

For fleas and ticks I use Billy No Mates from CSJ.  It's herbal and you just sprinkle it on their food.

I only worm twice a year on the advice of a Vet and so far (touch wood :) ) have never had a dog with worms.

you can also buy Catandogs disc. it has a magnetic protective field to repel fleas & ticks. it cost £24.99 and they say is 95% effective

This has been on my mind recently - Meg has been licking an awful lot and seems to have some irritation - I am behind with worming.  I was using Advocate after thinking that Meg had picked up lungworm a few years ago.  I hate using spot-on treatments - goodness knows how they work and Meg hates me applying them - she thinks that I am doing something awful to her when she hears the crinkly noise and feels something cold on her neck!  Advocate worms as well and because I have delayed using it I am behind with worming - whereas I have always been prompt with Drontal tablets every 3 months.  I was told that I only need use them once a year with Advocate (it doesn't treat tape worm)

I have never seen any evidence of fleas - but my granddaughter said the other night that her Mum says that she always seems to have a bite after staying up here.  They have a cat which sleeps all over the house - so I have my doubts.  Nevertheless I do believe that with a dog in the house the fleas don't bite the humans - certainly not so much and that it may seem that all is OK.  Seeing one flea probabally means that there are hundreds hiding away somewhere and that fills me with dread.  Yuk.
