My bitch is due to be in season this month that is if she goes as she has previously but it seems a few bitches are coming in late
she was mated early last year for the first time to a maiden dog  but no pups think maybe i was to early and will do a blood test this time
Thing is i am thinking of her having the chv but not sure when i should be taking her to have it done and as she doesnt had  a lot of bleeding and does nt swell much will have to watch her like a hawk so please can someone tell me when i should be taking her and IF she gets in welp when do i take her again?

Hi 1st how did mating go well ie was she standing & willing did they tie or slip mating , i had this problem bitch ready standing ties & even had tests done & blood plus i was told i had to take my bitch to stud asap when she was test by vet !!! nothing so try again nothing both stud dogs were proven. spoke to someone that said to try CHV (merial.com eurican herpes), also canine ovulation pads to try to pin point the right time she is ready. nothing to lose. pads cost me approx £15. tested everyday and notice change as the COTpads information said to look for then i took her to stud dog 2 good ties . then followed inforamtion about CHV vet gave her 1st injection 9 days after the 1st mating then 10 days before expecting date of whelping. and bingo 6 pups so it work for us ! nothing to lose so worth the try good luck . i give you websites for both www.ovulationpads.info & CHV www.merial.com  hope this helps

Hi Welshie, Tiegan had a chv vaccine both last litter and this litter. Vet told me they need the first within 7-10 days after 1st mating but the sooner the better in my eyes and 7 days before she is due to whelp.
Hope you have more success this time, also my girl came into season almost 2 months early this time, she is usually every 8 months

My bitch had her first CHV jab the day following the first mating, and the second 10 days before her due whelp date.

ok know now when to do chv but as the 1st mating she was very agessive with the dog who was also 1st time and love him he was patient and we had 3 matings as went by lady who swabbed and told us she was ready so took her on          8/10/12 days but each time my bitch was really not up for it at all, so this time will do idex test as i think i must have been too early ( but both my own males were singing for britain) and so i thought time must be right , but will see what happens when she comes in

first jab as close to mating as possible, and the second at 7 weeks. i have used it for years and never had any problems, infact woudnt mate a bitch now without it.

hi all, me too i would not mate a bitch without the chv jab either.

Hi - Those of you who use the CHV vaccine, how many of you give the first one before mating (ie when season starts) and how many of you wait till after mating?

Thanks

Within 24hours after mating here

Same here too, wouldn't consider a mating without the Canine Herpes vaccs.

Henri, you also give it afterwards?

I only ask this as someone (can't remember who) said they give it before, to minimise stressful things the bitch has to go through in the first days of pregnancy.

Is it an one time jab or a repeat?  like every mating
- By rabid [gb] Date 15.02.11 22:01 UTC
You have to give it twice for each mating.  Once around the time of mating and once later in pregnancy.

It has to be repeated for all subsequent matings.

Either is fine, but we choose to do it before mating.
- By Henri3402 [gb] Date 16.02.11 12:30 UTC
Hi rabid, we have always given it once after mating and then again 7-10 days before due date.
- By rabid [gb] Date 16.02.11 17:03 UTC
Great thanks.  When there are multiple matings, do you give is asap after the first one, or do you wait till the bitch is refusing and then give the jab?

(Just thinking that, as we are going to be abroad for the mating, should we have it done before we go or should we wait till we come back - which would be after all matings and perhaps a day or 2 after first refusal, as we have to travel back....).  Anyone any opinions?

We don't do any more than 2 matings and give a few days after the second mating.  We have an excellent Vet and followed his advice the first time we used it and have continued to do the same.

We gave ours 5 days before first mating and will do the second around 10 - 14 days before due date
