Topic Dog Boards / General / Lucy the lab is here at last!!!!

Well we got to Saturday the 28th finally!!! We collected Lucy this morning, and she's been given the all clear from the vet, had her first vaccs etc. Brainless-thanks for the advice, already I feel a little overwhelmed at the responsibility and trying to do everything the right way! I'm glad it's not just me. Shirl-I'm not trying the 7 day housebreaking by the book, I'm taking her out every time she sniffs (quite a lot!!) and looks as if she needs to go, but twice now we've gone out, hung around whilst she does nothing but look at me adoringly, only to find that as soon as she's back in the house she wees on the floor! there's newspaper in her crate and shes been once on that, but I think more by accident than design. If I catch her in the act inside I shout 'bannanas!' at her and call her outside to her 'patch', but most of the time she's wee'd before I know it, so it's too late to make a noise. Any ideas? or will it pass in time?! She has slept twice in her crate already-she was the last of the litter to go to her new owners, so she's been used to sleeping on her own for 5 nights-tonight will be telling!!!
It's so good to know that I have support here from you all, thank you.
Nic :)

Don't worry :) Our pup seemed to pee every 5 minutes the first day or two - it will pass :)

Just keep on doing what you are - don't forget, lots of praise if she gets it right, say nothing and grin and bear it if she gets it wrong :) She'll get it in the end if you are consistent.

Ahhhhhh Nic, I'm so glad you have Lucy now. That's wonderful! The first couple of days are pretty rough. You want to do everything right, but just go with the flow, as they say. Good luck tonight! Let us know how it went. Shirl :D

Congrats,
We picked up our pup 3 weeks ago and we all absolutely adore him . With regards to toilet training him , we were lucky in that his breeder had taught the litter well . She recommended using old towels instead of newspaper and this has worked so well with him - just an idea but maybe one to try . He goes every time on the towel . The only downside being that if the kids leave clothes on the floor.........I'm sure you get the picture !!

why are you shouting bananas--the men in white coats will be calling for you soon :D
- By John [gb] Date 28.12.02 20:04 UTC
Men in white coats lurk around the corner watching all Lab owners dizzy!

This is the hardest time Nic. It slowly gets better. Remember, all training at this time is preventing things starting which you are going to have to train out later. For example, however much you might want to, DON'T encourage her to jump up. Later on, 6 stone of Labrador jumping up is no fun! Little things like that. Brought on slowly and gently and you will have so much fun. I never take Anna for a walk, Anna and I go for a walk together! A subtle difference but the difference between fun and chore.

Regards, John

Well the day is drawing to an end, and I think on balance that Lucy has gone to the loo outside as many times as she has inside! And the only poo produced today was outside (when my husband was on pee patrol-hurray!!!:D) I'll be happier in the morning when we've got through the first night, especially as she's slept alot this afternoon and this evening!
I'll keep you all posted tomorrow, thanks so much for your continued support, I know most of you have heard all these gripes a hundred times before!!!
Nic :)

Yes congrats Nic :)
