Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / spilt season ?

My bitch should be on day 10 of her season - she's been losing blood and is very slightly swollen - I had her progesterone tested on Monday and it came back 1.5 so pretty low - had her tested again on Thursday and it had gone DOWN to minus 1 - she's till losing a bit of blood but nothing much and her vulva is pretty much the same -  could she be having a split season ?-Idexx said to have her tested again late next week which I will do but my gut feeling is tha she's not really in season at all . This will be her fourth season ( she's a once a year girl) and each of her other seasons have been text book and she whelped a lovely litter two years ago with no problems - I've never had a bitch with this problem before and would value your thoughts !

there is a post on here about progesterone levels and if i remember right at 1st the levels were like yours then went down then started to go back up ,it could be that its a split season or she might be a late ovulater this time i will see if i can find the post for you

I have experienced a bitch with split season successfully mating and carrying a litter.

She normally has quite long and heavy seasons, usually bleeding throughout the matings.

This particular time, her season seemed to be over in 2 weeks.  No more blood or swelling, so I assumed that she had finished.  One week later she started bleeding again, very heavy.  One week later again (day 28 from the start) I took her to the vet, worried about a pyo.  He looked up inside her, and told me that it was a perfectly normal season!

I got home, only for her to mate with one of my lads as soon as she had chance.  Only the one mating, day 28.  She had a litter 9 weeks later, no problems.

I've had something like it twice (a season stopping almost as soon as it had started) -but both were first seasons and neither started up again soon. In the first bitch, Malinois, she had a normal season 8 months later, in the other, Papillon, she had a normal season 3 months later. Both have since had pups and it's not happened again.

I have now had a couple of bitches with false starts to their seasons and each one started again within two weeks, with a full length season.

Interestingly these were all mature bitches that had previously already been bred from, and they were mated on these seasons, once properly in and produced pups, if I remember rightly each time there were other bitches in season..

> Interestingly these were all mature bitches that had previously already been bred from,

Wow - that is exactly the same as this particular bitch.
