Topic Dog Boards / General / My Dog ate What ?
- By NatalieH [gb] Date 11.02.11 11:36 UTC
Hi , everyone , i seen this programme last night on sky , and it was based on the strange things dogs have eaten. One St bernard ate a Soup Spoon ! and a German Shepard ate a Ox's tongue which was pinned together with silver pins as part of some sort of ritual and was found in central park New York ! . Just wondering what strange things if anything any of your dogs have eaten ??

I had a borzoi that ate a torch once, complete with bulb, batteries etc! The batteries done her the most harm burning the back of her throat, I had to syringe liquid into her mouth every hour or so to sooth it :(   Same bitch on route to a show once tried to eat a multipack of cartons of ribena and a pack of crunchies - not as serious as the torch but when you and your travelling companion have each spent several hours bathing and blow drying dogs then she covers them in pink squirts and sticky crunchies it feels as bad :-D Her older brother went BIS that day despite the pink streaks on his face. Same bitch also ate a bottle of metacam out the show bag on route to another show. Most unusual for borzois to be like this, usually you can't even get them to eat dog food!

omg a torch ! , awww the poor lil love , glad she is ok now :) lol @ the ribena and crunchies , the only thing our dog has come close to eating was a family bag of haribo's that he tried to steal out of the shoppings bags and hide in his bed :). whats metacam ? x

When we first got our rescue dog, he ate a load of the children's name tapes and then proceeded to leave named poos as we walked - no excuses for not poo-scooping :) :) :)

Can you envisage a young boxer getting into a bag of cement powder, playing with it and getting it into every crevice of his face -nose, ears, eyes?

I can .... :-)

Years ago my Mother's Dobe ate a ball of wool..and a pack of crayons, he was pooing mullti coloured strings of sausages....! He also ate the plaster off the walls and chewed a hole in the washing mashine :)
My lot so far are not eaters of odd things but I walk often with a springer who has a passion for sented poo bags, and he scoffs them down like lightning much to his owners horror (Empty ones LOL ) People seem to drop them like confetti !!

Half a curry that someone had eaten and them dumped in our lovely north London park is the best I can think of. Actually it was a lovely park, but we did find a LOT of food rubbish for my American cocker to scavenge. Luckily he has a cast iron stomach.

I had a terrier who unwrapped a present from under the tree. Toffees in bag, then boxed, then shrink wrapped and then Xmas wrapped !
There were too many to eat so she sucked the others a bit and hid them. Under the rug, behind cushions, in her bed. We were finding stuck on toffee for weeks afterwards lol

when my duaghter was young she was always using the telephone. it waqs the old round dial type so, we put a padlock on the phone. one night out walking the dog I went to pick up his poo only to discover this strange hard metal 'thing' he had eaten, swallowed and passed the padlock including the key!

An anti inflammatory, she ate the whole thing, about half full - and the plastic bottle. No side effects amazingly for her but my other dog (who the medication was for) was a bit sore till we got home and got him more medication!

My working cocker got to bags of the pink plaster mix stuff, it was about 2 inches deep in the hall, and my wee white pup was a pale pink....

My niece's lab ate a pair of knickers from out of the Laundry basket.  It cost my niece £1500 for the surgery for which the insurance wouldn't pay as they said that "It was avoidable, and not an accident" !!!!
- By flattiemum [gb] Date 11.02.11 15:06 UTC
Oldest Flattie ate the skirting boards and big chunk of wall just after getting a new kitchen!! He has however got himself in serious trouble, medically, by eating the covering of a stuffed toy in one go which caused a blockage which needed an op. Three months after he recovered he got a hold of a large soft ball which he unstuffed and swallowed.....back for more surgery and Vet giving us not a lot of hope as his innards had been so badly affected the first time. He survived amazing the Vets at the size of the ball he had swallowed. All toys are now gone.
Just keeping a careful eye on our most recent Pup, his son!!

My daughter's springer ate so many socks (4 times in as many months!) and was at the vet's so many times to have the resulting obstructions removed that the vet suggested putting a zip in her tummy!!  Daughter then started using a muzzle on Lucy - in the house whilst she was picking up children's clothes until they managed to train her out of this habit.
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 11.02.11 17:20 UTC
one of mine was a sock muncher too. Thankfully she never needed surgery but pooed out and sicked up loads! We have no idea how she even got so many as we were so careful knowing what she's like! However the worst thing she ate was a tea towel when she was a puppy that she sicked up whole! I've still no idea how it fit!
My friends parents dog had to have surgery to remove a blockage. The blockage turned out to be 47 hair bobbles!
Its amazing what they will eat and without us even knowing most of the time

A koi carp, still alive! It jumped out of the pond, I jumped up from chair to get it, goldie got there first :-(
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 11.02.11 19:26 UTC
Thanks for the giggle,
Zuma was quite small and was investigating the garden, we let him thru to 'see' the pond in 'our' half of garden (fence down middle to prevent illegal swimming sessions) ........Now we have some koi.....quite BIG koi, one of them likes being hand fed and will take your finger into his mouth if you'r not quick enough with the koi cakes.........Zumas nose went into water........koi thought 'FOOD' and came looking and sucking. Zuma didn't half jump :-D
Can't think why but took a while befor he went too close again.

When our Boston was a puppy about 14 wks old my partner was left in charge of her whilst I was out,he had a headache so decided to take a couple of Nurophens on fell on the floor near the puppy he looked every where for it but could'nt find it so presumed she had eaten so he rang the vets they said to try and get a solution of washing soda into her to induce vomiting,he didnt think this was right he even tasted the solution himself as not to put her at risk,he then went straight to the vets they did the same she the vomited but only her tea no sign of any capsule, she came back looking like a bedraggled rat only for me to find the capsule on the kitchen floor so all this for nothing but better safe than sorry and it was a Sunday evening so emergency fees as well.

Best mates great dane is a bit of a muncher... as well as the standard bin contents and counter surfing including a cheque for nearly 500 quid, she has also munched her way through wall plaster, skirting boards, door frames, her shed (she ate so much of that it collapsed under its own weight) and most recently... the kitchen door has a 18 inch diameter hole in it, through both sides.

> I walk often with a springer who has a passion for sented poo bags

When my boy was a pup he seemed to be having a bit of trouble with pooing, so I looked under his tail, and had no option but to put a bag over my hand and pull out a great long white plastic carrier bag! Much to the amusement of the other dog walkers with me.....
Still don't know where he managed to get it from in the first place (and eat it in secret).
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 11.02.11 22:48 UTC
Years ago my first dog Alice an EBT ate a slipper whole ( one of those spanish ones with white fluff inside ) I only realised when she puked it up whole covered in slime while in the front seat of my van. I also had a GS that ate the draw from my washing machine. And my dogs which I have now especially my frenchie are partial to a door seal or two :)
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 11.02.11 23:31 UTC
It's an illness  called PICA (strange eating habits). One of my earlier dogs swallowed a lead & had to have it removed. Then swallowed another one (about 39" long) & puked it up - whole - 10 days later, I still have the photo. My younger girl has eaten vetbed, a key, 2 leads whilst in the car, her own & off another dog, and last week had a bun, a pack of butter, unopened pack of cheese one day & the next day a loaf and a bag of frozen oven chips when I was in the middle of unpacking the shopping and got distracted by a phone call. At least most of the things were edible to start with. My friends dog ate a pair of leggings which came out whole the other end.

I nearly had a fit when my puppy produced six blue balloons--let's say my (adult) children who were meant to keep an eye on him were on the receiving end of some very stern words that night...

The weird things is, where the hell did he find the balloons? It's got to be at least 12 years since we had a kids' party here.
- By Mandy D [gb] Date 12.02.11 13:43 UTC
My terrier used to eat deflated balloons and they are often found on walks from balloon events. One still had the string attached and I managed to stop that one from being swallowed. She passed an enormous scrunched up piece of rubber once. Friends have a collie that was recently opened up for the 4th time despite having been muzzled since the previous op. She has to have special food as her insides are in such a mess from all the operations.

Webcam wire, Ipod wire, Speaker wires, Camera upload cable, Phone upload cable...needless to say, we now have a computer desk with doors! Oh and 1 upholstered Computer Chair...& the wooden fire surround. He's 8 months now, but still wouldn't trust him near a cable of any kind!
