Topic Dog Boards / Health / My Collie is behaving oddly
- By Pinky Date 10.02.11 19:46 UTC
My 12yr old spayed girl has been 'odd' since last Friday.
She's restless and cannot settle down, she paces up and down or just stands in the room.

She's eating well has no tummy upsets and normal poo's.
When we take her up the garden she either stands at the fence looking over into the fields sniffing the air or just stands in the middle of the garden.

When we take all of the dogs for their daily walks she's off, frisky and running as fast as her age and recently repaired leg will allow her.
She had cruciate ligament surgury in October and has made really good progress, her weekly hydrotherapy is working wonders.

She's always been flirty with male dogs but now she's a total tart!

Any suggestions?

If only they could tell us?
Could be a urine infection if she is becoming a slapper, are the dogs interested in her, is she weeing more?

Do they suffer from dementia? My old boy is occasionally just standing and staring, I suppose when you think of their age it's a possible.
I would pop her down to the vet to get piece of mind. Good Luck.

Yes please do get her checked over at the vets... it may be an infection of something of that sort but it's best to rule that out before considering anything else.

From what I've been recently reading, there is a dementia-type condition in old dogs called CCD... it's what my mum's old girl most likely had before she went to the bridge. I have also read of some supplement that may help in old dogs - I'm taking on an oldie myself so have been reading up! - called Aktivait which is said to really help with the mental functions of old dogs. (I tried to see if there was a human equivalent lol!).

Thing is she see's the vet regularly because of her leg op and he's well pleased with her.

She's weeing as normal and even though she was spayed at just over a year old she's always had a man dog fascination, all play bow and chase me chase me stuff, at the moment she's even more into it.

I don't feel that she's losing it, her mind is as sharp as ever. She just seems restless and unsettled in the past week.

Maybe she's starting to feel young again after nearly 3 months restraint and re-hab from the leg op.

Maybe she is, and doing the canine equivalent of cashing in her pension fund and setting off on a round the world cruise! :)

I think I'll check out that Activait stuff though if only to use on the OH ;)

Have you had her eyes checked?  This is the behaviour that one of my dogs and a friends dog started when they went blind and deaf at almost the same time.  They just couldn't cope with losing both senses so close together.

Something else that crossed my mind is that one of my young Shelties is in season and I wondered if that could make my old girl feel a little wanton and restless especially as she's now feeling so much better after the operation on her leg.

I know there's nothing wrong with her eyes she can spot a doggie treat at 50 paces or a rabbit at a couple of miles.

At the last vet visit she got an all over check and as I said he's well pleased with her.

we used Aktivait for a Rott for her last 18 mth/2 yrs, she lasted till she was nearly 14 so entitled to go a bit gaga, she was also on soloxine, devils claw, and evening primrose!!!. Aktivait definatly helped the mental function, she had got to the stage of going outside - standing - what did I come out here for?, return to the house.........and then pee  1st lot from vet to try but then I got them from vet-medic as they are not POMs and lot cheaper.

Blimey - you could have become an agent!   You would make a bomb selling it to CD'ers alone!  :-)  :-)  :-)

There were some left after we lost her..........the thought did cross my mind, I regularly go up and down stairs and forget half of what I went up for, I seem to be writing an awful lot of lists these days too :-D :-D
