Topic Dog Boards / General / dry cabinets

firstly I would like to say this is no critism of any one who uses drying cabinets when grooming or people who are happy for their dogs to be dried in one. I was interested to know what the general feel about them is. Personally I just cant get my head around the idea of putting my dog in one not just because of one nasty accident but the concept of my dog or any dog in a place it cant egt out of with a heat being blown on to it.
if i am mad ok I can take it lol :)  just interested to hear others opinions.

Personally, I hate them.  I find them unnecessary and unpleasant.  I've groomed for 6 years now, never used a cabinet with my own customers' dogs, but I have seen them when I was training, and during brief stints at kennels that used them - the dogs aren't keen, and I have seen some that have been in outright panic.

I've managed perfectly well with a hairdryer all this time :-)

I would never use one!

Mine are not very good with the blaster let alone putting them into a dry cabinet - silly question time doesn't the dog get overheated in them?  How exactly do they work?

They have a programmable unit so the temperature is monitored, and an alarm goes off after a predetermined time.  So the dog could be in, say, for 30 minutes at 20C.

The heat is the least of the issue from what I've experienced - it's being enclosed in a tiny environment with solid walls, sitting on top of mesh with a massive fan underneath in some cases, or next to mesh with a massive fan in others, that causes the immense stress I've seen dogs suffering.

Totally unnecessary when a cheapy hairdryer does just as good a job, often faster IME, with considerably less stress - and if the dog does find the hairdryer stressful, they have the option of letting the groomer know (because they haven't been shut in and left for however long), and they won't have the added panic-inducer of being completely enclosed.

I don't like blasters either for what it's worth :-)

I have a drying cabinet in my salon but only use it for short coated dogs or dogs that are clipped short all over as I prefer to fluff dry the others for a better finish. Most dogs are quite happy to be in it and a few seem to prefer it to being fluff dried.I would never leave a dog in one if it showed any signs of stress, all dogs are tried just for a couple of minutes to begin with-any that don't willingly go back in of their own accord after that don't ever get to go in one again. Most of the regulars happily hop in and some just go to sleep in there.I personally tried it before I bought it and its a gentle heat not unlike being under a sunbed with a fan.I also always leave one of the doors slightly open for extra ventilation(using a mesh divider so the dog cant get out).
BUT-a few dogs have absolutely hated it-obviously a dog which scrabbles or scratches at the doors or starts panting heavily comes out straight away and never goes in there again.I would hate to think any groomer would just stick a dog in one and just leave it getting stressed out, thats just abuse. But then a few dogs hate blasters and have to be dried with a stand dryer, its just a case of seeing what the individual dog is happy with.
My sheltie thinks the drying cabinet is great fun for some reason and if I leave the doors open and turn it in on she jumps in there bouncing from side to side and barking her head off(she is nuts I have to say!)-I don't quite know what it is about the circulating air that she loves so much but its definitely a highlight of her day :-)

Nice to know I am not alone with this then , I agree Nikita but the heat does worry me even if they do have failsafe mechanisms. Now you are worrying me I didnt think there was a problem with blasters I thought it helps with getting the think dead hair out. Bearing in mind my boy is a long haired shep with very thick trousers.
Will def stick to my guns ... no drying cabnets I would add the very nice lady was happy to do what I wanted for my dogs and they were quite happy and groomed
