my bitch was mated on day 15 and 17, the first tie was for 1hour 10 mins and the 2nd tie was 1hour 30 mins?!! is this normal and would it have any relevance on her puppies? she is now 9 weeks 2 days and no sign of pups, she was scanned in pup last week although the vets werent 100% sure, she is going back to the vets tomorrow for another scan and then see what to do from there! any help grately appreciated.

how long they tie dont make any differents on how many pups or even if they catch a 2min tie can produce a large litter and a 2h tie could end up only 1 pup! or none if the timing isnt right...
sounds like you need an xray that way you will know for sure if vet carnt see any pups it could be 1 or 2 pups and are hideing in the ribs maybe? and a scan not pick that up or maybe a single pup and not enough hormone to get her going have you felt any movement from pups or seen her tum moveing about? is it that your breed are none for going over ??
all the best at your vets tomorrow but if it was me id be asking for xray and its very safe for mum and unborn pups

thanks for this, so a long tie isnt uncommon then? i will ask the vet about the xray then that sounds like a good idea, thanks again.

> so a long tie isnt uncommon then

I would most definitely not consider a one and a half hour tie to be common.  And if your girl is overdue, are pups moving well?  I would not let a bitch go over this much, we all have differing ideas.

the vets said a long tie isnt a problem, but no the week before she was due she was scanned and looked to possibly have a pup but they wouldnt say for sure so they said to leave her until 3 days over and check again, the bitch didnt look in pup at all which is why i had her scanned the first time, she has been back for a scan again today and they found nothing, but what could possibly be the reson for such a long tie? does this have any revelance on her not being in pup?

I mated my bitch a while ago and she had a tie of 1 hour 25. This resulted in one pup born by caesarean on day 66 (as felt big to two vets). Puppy was small and faded away on day 4 despite us doing all we could. Same bitch was mated subsequently and had 1 x 20 min tie, producing 7 healthy pups to a different stud dog.

I am not knowledgeable in this area, but that is my experience.

Good luck.

My boy several years went to a girl that resulted in ties for over an hour.  The first litter produced three healthy pups but a repeat mating two years later, again a tie of over an hour, resulted in one very large deformed dead puppy.  The vet advised them to wait as well which in turn led to their bitch developing an infection and nearly losing her life.

These days a tie over 30 minutes has me worried.

I've been told a long tie like that can mean the bitch is going over, ie not at her most fertile anymore, but as your girl is in whelp that clearly wasn't the case there!

Owning a dog which occassionally stands at stud, I can honestly say, length of tie is of no consequence... if the girl producies viable eggs and is taken to the stud at the correct time, it all lies in the hands of nature..

my boy has produced a litter of 9 from a desperately held on slip of no more than 5 seconds (one mating)
a litter of 4 from a 1hr57min tie (one mating)
a singleton (to the above bitch) on a 10min tie (2 matings of around 10mins each)
a litter of 14 from a 10min tie (3 matings over 5 days)
a litter of 8 from a hold on slip (one mating
another 4 litter of 7's & 8's resulting from two ties each of around 15mins

on the other hand, my girls over the years have produced an average of 9 per litter (largest 14, smallest 3 pups) from ties ranging from slips to 2hrs...

even if you take the bitch to the dog on a 'spot on' day... it all depends on how many viable eggs she produces :-)

hi everyone thanks for all your advice, sounds like it is abit of an unknown entity this tying business, but as my bitch is not in pup i presume it was not a good thing. does anyone know if this is maybe an indication of any problems with the bitch which results in her being in fertile? next time im going to have her blood tested to check exact time. thanks again

i had a long tie last year of 2. 40 mins, worried myself sick i called breeder. Both dogs were maiden which we put it down too. The bitch went on to have 4 pups which is a good size for my breed. Another breeder told me recently she had a whopping 3hr tie, both dogs were experienced and she went on to have 5 puppies. I have read somewhere that it can be caused by the constricting vulvar ring going into spasm ???

omg...2hrs 40 mins.....i would be in a total panic with my size breed tied for that long.....not to mention with my back i wouldnt be able to move for a fortnight afterwards lol.

LOL ive often said a milking stool would be a great thing when im at the dirty end. Never had a tie over 40 mins, average 20mins had puppies every time. Smallest 6 largest 17. I think its difficult to achieve a tie in my breed unless girls are bang on. If times passed and nothings happened either not ready yet or gone over. But i would imagine its down to the bitch a long tie, after all he can only ejaculate for a certain length of time (then he rolls over n starts snoring) gland will decrease in size, so perhaps a bitch holding on.

I would be pushing to have xray and c section if xray showed up pups. For the sake of my bitch as no matter what breed this seems a very long time to go over.
