Help!!! Dillon my 11 week old cocker is biting when playing. He has plenty of toys of his own but takes pleasure in biting when playing with us humans!!! Can anyone please tell me, is this normal and how can I stop it. Other than the biting he is very well behaved.

Thanks

Rachel

Hi Rachel ..if you use the search button at the top of the board and put in BITING or PUPPY MOUTHING , you will find there have been lots of threads on the subject ...maybe you can find something there that will help?

Hi Rachel

Congratulations on your new Cocker Puppy :D :D

Play biting and mouthing is all part of puppy behaviour and is totally normal for any puppy.

As Melody has said Mouthing and Biting has been covered at some length on the Board. If you look at the bottom of the page you will see page numbers if you go to page 3 you will find it on there.

HI
I too have a pup who just loves to bite . He has loads of toys , soft ones , chewy ones and hard ones but he too loves to nibble at your hands ( or toes ) . I presumed it was normal behaviour???

Hi Lel

I think it is normal but I just wanted to make sure, i've owned dogs before but I have never had a puppy.

Yes, this is normal puppy behaviour, and they need to learn how to be gentle. This is what they would otherwise learn from other dogs, but people are real softies in comparison!

Get a copy of "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey. This will explain dog behaviour very clearly, and how to cure problems without creating others.

Does he have free access to all those toys? Or are they kept away from him and *you* decide when he has a toy? And when he has a toy - do you intereact with him? So often puppies are surrounded (like kids at Christmas <G>) with toys and when they pick on up nobody notices or plays with them - but when they start to bite a human hand - bingo! They get fuss (OK - it's not always the kind of fuss they might hope for - but it's still attention........) If those toys are scattered all over the floor - gather them up and put them away - give him two or three and *play* with him with them - I'll bet he can get as good a game from a ragger as he can frfom your fingers :-)

My puppy loves to bite my hands. Fortunately, she has learned not to bite too hard!

He has loads of toys, soft and hard. My kids and I play like crazy with him. He is getting better at understanding the word no!! I will try the toy thing and let you know how I go on.
