- By minnie mouses [gb] Date 28.01.11 19:29 UTC
Hi all do you let your girl stay at the stud owners home for a few days before mating. my girl is going to stay at stud owners home from day 9 until they have mated . She is going to send pictures of matings by email, would you leave your girl i have mixed feelings about it  what would you do.

I wouldn't leave any of our girls unless I really really knew the stud owner well, and even then only if it didn't stress the bitch out. I suppose if were paying say an average of £800 for stud fee I would want to see the mating take place myself plus it usually takes more than one pair of hands to help if anything was to go wrong and Im sure my bitch would want it to be somebody she knew.

I have had my bitch stay with the stud owners, I have also stayed with stud owners with my bitch for up to two weeks.

In my breed we all do tend to know each other well.  the stud dog owner is unlikely to be a complete stranger to the bitch, and they are pretty well adjusted and happy to visit with people, I do wonder if they would rather nto come home based on some of the photos I have had of them making themselves very much at home..

My own girl went and stayed with the stud dog owner because both myself and stud dog owner have young family and we know each other really quiet well (he had offered me a bitch about 6 months before my girl come into season), first time she only stayed for a week, because the stud dog owner was going on holday, she missed so next time she came into season she went up on day 8 and was going to stay untill she stoped standing for the boy, after 7 days of her standing i was starting to think she would never stop but we made arragments to go pick her up the next day (xmas eve) the stud dog owner said he was happy to have her stay there over xmas as she was such a easy going girl and fitted right in with his pack, she really enjoyed her little holiday up there as he has loads of land and huge fenced areas for his dog.

I brought my stud dog and owner over to stay with me, but we have become very close friends over the years. I personally wouldn't wish to leave my girl with anyone unless I was there too, I would just have to work out a schedule to accommodate it, often the right stud dog is some distance away.

If you know and trust the stud dog owner then you go by your instincts, it's just not something I would do, where my girl goes so do I.

I regularly have bitches to stay with me.  And my stud fee is not £800!!  It is £200, and there is no charge for looking after the bitch, and I always take visiting bitches to bed with me.

I have had girls mate after a few days, and I've had bitches mate very, very late in season.  It doesn't matter how long they stay, as long as they are not stressed.  I have never once offered (or been asked for) proof of a mating.  I would be damn well insulted.  If I am going to take such good care of your girl, I am hardly going to let her loose to roam round the block, looking for action!

The bitch owners know the bitch has been mated, because they trust me.  And the arrival of pups is a good giveaway.  I absolutely hate the adverts that you see for stud dogs, and a photo of a bitch tied.  My job is to ensure a bitches safety, not to ass around with a camera.

Make sure that whenever a door is opened, she is outside etc. that they ensure that your girl is on a lead,  One of my friends girls was killed by a car a year ago when she stayed at a stud dogs for mating and escaped.

If the owner is known and trusted, there is no problem.. I have left a girl with stud owner... a fair distance, and planned to run back and forth... when my girl refused to stand, owner said she had room.. why no leave and collect the following week... my girl would stay with anyone so I knew she wouldn't stress, and a lovely litter of pups ... however, Ihave one girl who is very clingy and I know she would stress.. so she would never be left, no matter how much I trust someone...

On two occassions I have had bitches stay with me for a few days.. and another occassion, both bitch and owner stayed for the week

On the last two occasions my girls have stayed with the stud for mating.  Not planned though.  On the first occasion it was so hot H suggested I leave her and they try late evening/early morning - apparently they had lovely matings under the apple tree!  Second time it was a young dog and he needed to take his time!

My girls showed no signs of stress on me leaving etc even though neither had ever been left anywhere without me before.  They weren't particuarly bothered when I returned either - obviously had a good time!

I was reguarly updated by text/email/phone.  Matings produced litters on both occasions.

Having know H for many years and been to her home before I knew her set up and other dogs and knew mine would be well cared for.

I only pay a handling fee at time of mating and as my mentor says - it's in her interest to get good matings.

I wouldn't be happy leaving a bitch with anyone I didn't know well though.

Could not agree more.

Absolutely a resounding no from me.

My girl went to stay at the stud owners and it was ideal as she is far more experienced than me. I declined the photographic proof as I trusted her and had a lovely litter of 3 which is a big litter

I have been in contact with stud owner spoke to her a few times she has put me incontact with other bitch owners that have stayed there & they said that she was very good rong you to let you know how things were going, & there girls were fine.It is a 3hour drive there and back. The bitches that have stayed there have never missed, She sounds very well in formed just waiting for my girl to come into season.

You sound as though you have checked the stud owner thoroughly, it's not something I would do but I wish you all the best
- By minnie mouses [gb] Date 04.02.11 17:22 UTC
Hi have decided not to us her stud because do not want to leave my girl there for a week. Have found one that does not take pictures of mating  & suites my girl much better. Having 1 or 2 matings having blood tests to find right timing.
- By STARRYEYES Date 04.02.11 19:52 UTC
I would not leave my girl as I dont think it would be the best for her. Everyone knows thier own dog best and the right way to go .

We always insist on the Bitch staying over for the week, it makes her more relaxed with us as with our breed it's a very hands on process, the dog is more eager as he's had time to get her scent, and it also means that when she's at her most fertile she's already here and we can judge when best to mate. Seeing as we have people coming from all over the country to use our boys I wouldn't expect them to drive hundreds of miles several times during that week and nothing happen when they got here as their bitch wasn't ready.
We also video the matings so that (if the owners wish) we can show them proof that the matings took place. In all the years we've been doing it this way we've only had 1 person refuse to leave their bitch here, who subsequently went on to use another dog, driving backwards and forwards with her bitch, who got so stressed out that they failed to even get a mating.

I can't see what the problem is with leaving a bitch at the stud dogs house, I have done so on occasion myself when I've wanted to use someone elses dogs on my girls.

I don't trust anyone else with my animals; they're too important to me.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.02.11 09:17 UTC
I would expect them to be just as important to any stud dog owner I have left them with.

My Lexi stayed a month with the stud dog owners with her last litter as she had a split season and we were unsure if she was ready two weeks in or not, as it turns out not, so she stayed until she started again, and got to mating time as she was so happy and settled.

With the two overseas trips with my girls I have stayed 10 - 12 days with the stud dog owners along with my girl.

Ditto.

Another ditto from me.

I know of someone who left his bitch with a friend to use a dog he had bred. He never thought that the pups looked like what he would have expected and later found out that a dog she also had there had a habit of breaking in to bitches a couple of times. This was someone he should have been able to trust!

But even so my girlies are too soft to be happy at someone elses home without me around.
