This will prob sound really stupid. But who and when can you get an affix? What is the purpose ?

I wanted to apply for my own but have been told I dont need one. So just thought Id chuck it in here and gather some thoughts..

Thanks x

An affix is really only needed by breeders who want to easily linked to the puppies they produce - it's like the puppies' surname. Dogs without an affix are much more difficult to trace back to their breeder, so it's often a sign that the breeder isn't keen on associated with them ...

In my opinion, if you dont own any bitches then it is not worth getting an affix & even then if you are not breeding the cost is a little pointless. I know there will be others who disagree with me but the original point of a affix was to help promote your breeding.

Ah ok. Mine does have his breeders affix. I just would of liked my own aswell.

My intention is to show him and when old enough providing all health checks and he turns out to be a good specimin build an temprement wise I would like to breed from him.

It's not true that only breeders 'need' affixes.  Many people who compete in various ways - obedience, working trials, agility, gundog tests, showing - benefit from having an affix as the various dogs they own and compete with can be seen to be owned and trained by them.  It is easier to identify them in results as 'belonging' to the same trainer/owner and it is a way of putting your name on what you do and have done with your dogs, regardless of who bred them.

I got my affix before I started to show as I wanted to let everyone know that they were my dogs just by their name. (without them having to thumb through the catalogue)

Is there a way of seeing if an affix has been taken already? Or what is avilible? (please excuse the spelling Im having a blonde day lol ) x

Most competitors in Ob, WT, Agility do NOT have an affix unless they breed. Those teams that excel do not NEED an affix for everyone else to know who owns them as of course their results are available in various specialist magazines and on the web etc so owner and dog are easily identified.

I have never found the need to have a kennel name, everyone knows my dogs, the same is true for people like Suzanne Jaffa (who made up the first Ob champion in ASD, the first WT Champion in ASD and now the first Dual Champion in ASD), Anne Bussey, Sheila Tannert the list is endless.

We got our affix to use as a sirname for our dogs - so that all three even if from different breeders all had our affix in common.8 Years later we are thinking of breeding,it now means every dog we ever owned of this breed had our affix in their name  part of the family !

I've got one, and I've never bred a litter, may not at this rate.  I use mine for my business as well though, so it's a little different.  I also use it as a username on a number of forums, because I'm always trying to push ethical breeding, and educating people about health testing, temperament, conformation (what little I know) and sometimes, ability.  For that reason, I try and link all three, so that I'm easy to find if people want to ask me anything.  If I don't know the answer, I know enough people who do, so don't mind spending time to help others find out what they need.

I can see the attraction of that, even though I only have one dog at present and he's not registered! (Though he could be, on Activity). I had/have a GCCF prefix for my cats, but unlike the KC, you can't add your prefix to cats you buy in, it's for breeding use only. I guess I like the idea of putting something personal (to me) on a dog's name, even if you didn't breed it yourself.

We got ours not that long after we started showing as it seemed to be a good way of linking our dogs to us and to start building our own identity before we think of the next stage of breeding.

I totally agree.  Although I do breed, it's only the little ones, but I still wanted my affix added to my 3 Collies names.  Not necessary, no, but I wanted them to be linked to me, and fully understand if others feel the same.

It's a nice touch, isn't it Jean, if you can do it.
Whenever I looked at cats' names on other registries overseas, where they could do it, I felt a tad cheated by not having the choice.

Ive only bought in 3 or 4 times over 30-odd years and I have never added my affix despite them being incorporated into my bloodlines.

If I dont breed them, they dont have my affix.

Added to which, I HATE writing out long names :-)

But you have the choice :)

I added my Affix to my own homebred bitch who only had a two word name adding at and affix, and sneakily added the new owners affixes to the two I exported to Australia where they can't add an affix to a registered dogs name.

All I did was add it as a third word onto the two word name for the pup so it was my affix, name, their affix (it obvioulsy didn't conflict with an existing affix).

I don't like long names so only use my affix plus one word.

I have just recieved my affix only took 10 days but i do have to wait till its issued in April to see if it conflicts.
Only reason i applied for my own was bitch owned in partnership and a fall out,so the dogs i own are now in my own name and affixSo my homebred boy is now my future with a bought in female..
£70 well spent
