We have 3 children and are looking for a family pet, youngest child is 5

We are interested in either the Norfolk Terrier or Basset Hound, would be grateful on advice on which breed would be better for us, where to get hold of one, please note we do not intend to breed or show the dog so are not concerned with KC Resigster, purely for a family pet.

I would still advise getting registered stock, as they are more likely to be bred by people who have taken care in their breeding, and are proud of what they have bred. That is not to say that bad breeders do not use the KC registration system. I would contact the relevant breed club for a puppy/breeder list, as those actively belonging to a breed club are more likely to be serious about their breed.

The breeds you mention are very different from each other, in size, coat and I imagine Temperament. One mans meat as they say is another mans poison. For instance dogs that have loose flews and skin, or floppy ears do not appeal to me, but you may find them attractive. Some people like a dog that is very active, some like couch potatoes! I would suggest that you visit a dog Show, or even better go and see Discover Dogs at Earls Court in a couple of weeks time! It is the first weekend of November I beleive, but check with Earls Court, or the Kennel Club.

Could not agree more with the above coments but would not think either breed would be ideal for a first time owner. Please do visit several breeders and make sure the dogs requirements and temperament will fit in with your families lifestyle. JH

Have you considered a Basset Bleu de Gascogne? They are smaller and more affectionate than English Bassets, and make excellent pets. They will be at Discover Dogs in Earls Court on November 3rd and 4th.

I have met the Grand Bleus, but not the Basset type! are you going to be at Midland Counties?

Hiya Brainless, Sorry I am unable to attend the Midland Counties this year, but I'll be at the LKA in December with 2 new import hounds.

Look forward to trying to see them!
