The reason there are so many bad-tempered German Shepherds and Dachshunds out there is because they are all obese and have bad hips and backs respectively?

I know this is fact because my vet told me today!!!

:-D
- By Jocelyn [gb] Date 28.01.11 21:09 UTC
If I where you I put my hard hat on and bullet prove vest for saying that on here!
- By Fleabag Date 28.01.11 21:23 UTC
LOL

This is most definitely a tongue in cheek post!
His simplistic explanation almost made me choke!
- By Dill [gb] Date 28.01.11 23:36 UTC
I'm afraid I'd have to express my worries about simplistic and unscientific thinking if my vet ever came out with anything like that :-D

So would I, but having heard some classics relayed to me recently by owners sadly I'm not all that suprised any more.

Never mind, I was in the vets last week and the locum told me that ALL Cocker Spaniels have heart defects.

hey I was told by my x-vet that the reason my 18 month old previously dry weimaraner bitch was incontinent immediatly after her spay surgery was because she was docked at 2 days old. apparently you cut the tail off and 18 months later the bladder stops working. nothing to do with him utterly messing up her surgery day before.oh and also it was my fault for buying a pedigree dog as they all weak.

And to think that so many owners trust their special pet to these people! :(
- By FreedomOfSpirit [gb] Date 29.01.11 11:34 UTC
Yes I know....apparently I'm now guilty of the cardinal sin of owning..."Posh Dogs" (Vet...."Hmmm....posh dogs are they...??)

Never mind the fact that I hardly ever have to take my dogs to see them...and on the rare occassion that we do (last time was home visit for Titer Tests) I am ALWAYS given the lecture about how "Raw Feeding is against any advise recommended by their practice"...and they ALWAYS have to let me know about the ONE dog in some undefined location in the area that has just been ill with Lepto...and then....by now presumably clutching at straws....trying to sell me Stronghold...!

No thanks.....

And all of this when they have the living...breathing...glossy...shining...pearly white toothed...evidence of exceedingly healthy....Raw Fed...unvaccinated dogs.....right in front of their very eyes :)

My former vet told me all breeders are cruel and that they always tell clients to never, ever return a pet to the breeder if they can't keep it. Notice I said former?

Well this was a routine booster appointment with barely any expertise required but I think my face probably said it all as he quickly added ".............but she is a good one...."

I don't need him to tell me that, but I also realise there is a time I MAY need him or one of his better-informed colleagues in an emergency situation and to be honest I've all but given up trying to find a local vet who is on my wave length.  Thankfully, as posted by others, we don't need to vist often and long may my well-bred pedigree continue to live a healthy life.

Docked tail and incontinence ? Nearly choked on my g and t! What did they teach for anatomy
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 30.01.11 19:46 UTC
There is actually a link between docked tails and urinary incontinence:
"There is also good evidence that the lack of a tail to wag affects the musculature at the base of the tail. That leads to increased incidence of urinary incontinence, particularly in bitches. Those muscles are very much involved in continence. Bitches with docked tails are four times more likely to be incontinent than bitches that have not got docked tails. Therefore, there is good evidence about the long-term effects of docking."

Taken from Northern Ireland Assembly Official Report for the Welfare of Animals Bill 2010

Ever taken a look at a Cocker, if you have tell me that because it is docked it does not wag - it is unbelievable what people will believe.
- By WestCoast Date 30.01.11 19:58 UTC
So there's 4 times as many incontinent Cocker bitches than an other undocked breed - say Cavaliers???  Really?
Just goes to show that you can prove whatever you want to prove! :)

ok I apologise it jsut seemed completely ridulous

What about in breeds which have naturally bobbed tails like English and French bull dogs and Boston terriers? Do they have a problem with incontinence too? or is it only docked dogs?
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 30.01.11 22:58 UTC
I dont know the answer Im afraid, it was just something that I had read and thought I would copy it to the thread as I thought it was an interesting point of view.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 31.01.11 11:19 UTC
Blimey Whistler was ill a while back and the only thing they could find wrong was a low heart beat. He would have only expected that if he walks about 6 miles a day - when I told him he does about 7 miles a day he had a clean bill of health!! (Cocker)
- By Whistler [gb] Date 31.01.11 11:22 UTC
You mean if I get my dogs tail docked I will be incontinent Oh cocker dogs not owners!!!
- By corgilover [gb] Date 31.01.11 19:11 UTC
thank god my vets shows border collies breed and obdenice okay we travel 30 mintues to her past at least 6 others but she is worth it and she owns the practice so all the others vets have been taught better than that is fact a lot of showers in this area go to her and we wonder why
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 01.02.11 13:17 UTC
I don't think docking has anything to do with it.  The tail muscles still still work, they don't need a propeller lol.  i'll tell my GR she shouldn't be dribbling as her tails not docked its not stopped for 14yrs and severl coffee cups.

Furryfriends do you appologise and stop wasing your Gand T will a choke lol.

I'm lucky with my vets but even they can try it on at times.  Hope she can be treated in some way to help her.
