Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dog With Small Testicle

I have just took one of my boys to the vets tonight for a booster and on examination the vet has noticed that one testicle is smaller than the other, she didn't push about having him nuetered but she did say to keep my eye on him for lumps or if it goes hard. Now i've looked on the web but only imformation is on undescended testicles so does anyone have any experience of this and does he really have a increased risk of testicle cancer? ( he is not one that i show nor was he kept for breeding so that is not a issue) i'm just worried now i love him more than anything and would hate for this to become a issue.

Testicles are not both exactly the same size & your vet should know this...unless it is extreamly smaller??

I've just had another feel lol, i guess it's 2/3 the size of the other or perhaps a little more than half.

No definatly no more than 2/3 difference, now i'm thinking maybe it was a decoy to get yet another doggy castrated without seeming like they were being pushy as they are very pro nuetering there.

What age is your boy?

He will be 2 in june

It probably wont change much in size now he is 20 months & probably(depending on breed) be fully grown but just check it every now and again. I cant see any reason why you need to castrate for the time being...

Thanks that was my thought too, he is not at dominant or overly manly so never have felt the need to have him castrated and he is very heavy coated and for my bitches that have been speyed their coats then become a nightmare so wouldn't want to curse him with a bad coat.

I have had dogs all my life and I have never met a matched pair, come to think of it not in any species.

hehe, now i've mulled it over for a few hours and had another check lol, im convinced that it was a big hint at getting him the snip cos this time i couldn't even tell which one was the biggest/smallest lol

Just check for lumps or changes in shape or firmness when you groom and forget the vet, tell you one thing, assuming it was a male, I bet the same could be said of him.

Haha was a female they're great vets as long as you switch ears off to the snippy snip questions :)

That is a gem!  :-)  :-)

I am cracked up laughing here.

I had this in a Yorkie boy.  I hadn't thought anything about it until a big deal had been made about it.

I never did have him castrated, just changed his name to "oddball."

We have a womble :)

I noticed this in one of my boys and he went on to develop a tumour in the other one. He was much older though and there was a very marked difference in size before he was castrated. Testicular tumours usually cause the other testicle to shrink and other dogs more likely to mount them as the tumour releases oestrogen.

I would keep a close eye on him and think about getting him castrated if it gets any worse. As others have said it's normal for there to be some difference so hopefully nothing to worry about.

Had the same thing with a rescue boy of mine , the person we got him from said he was neutered and with him having the fluffy brown neutered like coat I didnt check

The vet found he actually had a tumor with one testicle smaller than the other which must have been there quite a while and was castrated with no other problems
