i have a litter of pups that need hand rearing. i have put smallest pup to another nursing mum due to weight loss and she has improve so much. she is still very tiny and hasnt even doubled her birth weight but has put on weight everyday for the last week while she has been with new mummy. today she has lost 8 grams. Could she still be a fading pup even at 2 weeks? why has she been doing well and now loosing weight.? Worried please advise. i am keeping her with the litter on a heat pad and surrogate mum is feeding and cleaning her still but stuck for ideas. do i add welpi to her diet a few times a day or is she just going to fade away. She was 186g at birth and is now only 288g at 2 weeks and 1 day. i have another birth weight at 158g but now 186g and only 1 week old so you can see my worry with the weight thing

if pups are feeding and are feeding well then weight dont worry me to much now has long as its going on some just gain more than others and it depends were on the milk bar they are feeding too! ive read pups can fade upto 2weeks of age :( but this might not be the case just make sure she gets the back nipples when shes feeding ,the best of luck xxx

edit to ask are pups due to be wormed?? ive found that if pups have worm burden ther weigh slows down or even lose! do you worm at 2weeks???

Have you checked for dehydration, maybe she's too warm.

I'd maybe try nutridrops or liquid glucose.  I'm sure someone's around to say if this might offer something.  I know it can't hurt her so maybe worth a try.

How is she other than the weight loss.?

my vet told me that puppies can fade at any age but usually early rather than later. Some puppies are just not meant to survive no matter how much we intervene.
The puppies I have lost in the past usually stopped feeding from the teat and didnt latch onto the bottle with any vigour become very sleepy and difficult to keep warm.
I would be giving nutridrops available from hyperdrug  and puppy saver from fit and fertile  which will at least give them the nutrients they need.

I would attempt bottle feeding so that you can gage how much milk pup is receiving .How often are you giving the bottle I would attempt every 2 hrs at 2 wks.

Sorry you are having problems hope everything turn out for the best.

Skye......If they are wet - they are cold.
Pups should be warm and dry or chilling will cause any calories they take, to be used to heat themselves instead of gaining weight.

I sadly lost a pup at 3 weeks old, no problems born, around same size as the rest of the litter, then suddenly she started losing weight, vet couldn't find anything wrong with her, said her heart was strong, lungs/chest clear, he gave her an AB injection but sadly we lost her that same day :o(  Sometimes nature is cruel, but I have to keep telling myself it was for a reason.

Fingers crossed your little one picks up.

Thankyou for all your comments. All 8 pups are still with us. 7 are still doing really well. walking, eating ,playing. titch is still very small in fact just hitting the 300g mark and is now 3 weeks old her siblings are well over 700g each. she has been suckling from surrogate mum but still wasnt gaining weight so have added the odd syringe feed and have now managed to get her to eat from a saucer. she was wormed at 2 weeks old. she was the only one after week 2 that has lost weight. she ended up loosing nearly 20g in 2 days but has put it back on. she looks so skinny and scrawny compared to the others and still worries me but she does seem stronger. Hopefully she will pull through. thankyou again for all your comments

my vet advised leaving them with mum and hand feeding to top them up due to her only have 2 teats working. we have a heat pad to keep them warm from pet nap. best thing i ever bought. I think they have thrived more being with me as she stimulates them to go toliet and lets them suckle and keeps them warm. if pups are not with mum you need to be hanging wet cloths around bed area to help with moisure that mum would normally give with licking them (this was advised by a vet and also have read it a few times on internet).. how often do you feed them. i syringe fed mine according to welpi box and then when slightly older they took well to a bottle. make sure you wind the puppy after each feed.
