Does anyone still do this? I know lots who keep them outside although I couldnt put mine outside although they are toys.

Friends of mine have a huge Newfie in North Wales, he lives outside all year round, he does have access to the house if he wants to come in tho, he just bangs his head on the patio doors!!!...when we had the snow he was in his element. She also has a Cav and a Chi, both of whom stay indoors.
We have a Cav and a JR both indoor dogs, both of whom never go over the door if its raining...but in the snow, just try and keep them in!!

I could not keep mine in completely after 4 1/2 weeks old, LOL!!! 

They stay in because they want to be with us, but if I would stay out with them they would be quite happy outside in all weathers, but then they are a hunting double coated Spitz.

Took two years before my first would use a bed of any sort, tiled floor was all she was happy with, though her descendants are quite happy with bedding in plastic beds, but often they kick it out.

I'd imagine that if you keep more than a handful of medium to large size dogs you will need to use kennels, just because you wouldn't be able to fit them all in the house at all times.  It was certainly cheaper to get a double kennel built as their bedroom, than an extension.

Seems par for the course here in Australia.. sadly it only adds to the canine companion problems there is here too. :(

we have a kennel in the garden for the daytime and they come in at night.......or so they should!!!!
they seem to spend more time indoors than out because we have had it so cold. Although i still make them go out for at least a couple of hours a day just so they don't cause a fuss when having to go out when the weather gets warmer.

Yep, mine live outside, but they are a gundog breed, and have a good double coat.  Their kennels have a half height box, which keeps them warmer in winter than a full height box, and I lift the front off during the day and in the summer so they can lie in the sunshine and sleep.  They also get walked three times a day, and when it's light enough in the evening, I generally do some training with them. 

I wouldn't say it suits every breed, but I think it's perfectly possible with many breeds to have perfectly healthy well adjusted dogs that live outside. 

We're very much in the minority here as our dogs are indoor dogs (but if the landlord asks they sleep in the laundry - not the bedrooms!).  Almost everyone we know keeps their dogs outside and those that do come in sleep in the laundry - not the main living areas of the house.

With some of mine (the youngest three) it's the other way around.

Here in Spain lots of people keep their dogs outside most of the time, especially when they go out (they don´t want the dogs left indoors).  This means that we have a dreadful problem with dogs barking constantly, day and night.  My own little one spends most of his time indoors, although he does like to lie outside in the sun in the spring and autumn.  Since he has constant access to the garden whether or not I´m home, the choice is his.
