Health / Friends dog was given Ibuprofen, just wanted to check.
I work in a school and one of the people working there has an elderly JRT. She came up to me with a question about an hour ago and I just wanted to check my thoughts were correct. She said that her JRT has a sore leg (she didnt mention if he had been to see the vets about it and whether the dog was limping or had an open wound as it quickly became irrelevant). She said that she went away this weekend and left the dog with a friend. This 'friend' saw that the dog had a sore leg and gave the dog an ibuprofen tablet on Saturday and then again yesterday. My colleague then said that her dog had started to be sick this morning so she hadnt given him any breakfast (just bile not blood). She asked me what she should do as she was really upset with the person that she had trusted with her dog.
Apart from practically choking on my coffee, I suggested that they took him to the vets as soon as she could get him there as Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs and that he needed treatment immediately. I said that it was similar to a human taking an overdose of aspirin and that his stomach could be in a really bad way. I am right arent I? Dogs cannot tolerate Ibuprofen in any way shape or form :( I really hope she doesnt lose him as he is a smart little dog and is about 12 :(
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Just googled it the main comment was a resounding NO and get dog to vet especially asit is showing signs of toxicity ie vomiting. Why on earth do people treat someone elses dog with no knowledge

i think you are right and gave good advice, alot of people give their sets human pain killers not realising they are basically poisoning the poor pets :( lets hope she has got him to the vets.
oh my gosh - I wouldn't be responsible for my actions if someone decided to home treat one of my dogs. Yes, Ibuprofen is highly unsuited to dogs and the dog needs to see a vet ASAP. Please let us know the outcome. Keeping everything crossed x
Blimey I cant take Ibrofren it makes my staomach bleed let alone a dog Id sue them.

I'm sure it won't be too much of an issue(as it was only 1 tablet), but a call to the vets is paramount, the time it was given and the ingredients in the tablets. .
Ive just heard that the dog is seriously ill in the vets, apparently the ibuprofen tablets he was given were the double strength ones, ie 400mg rather than 200mg. so over the weekend he had 800mg of Ibuprofen. He is only a small JRT :(

Poor thing, I hope he pulls through. One of my dogs pinched some Ibuprofen once, luckily I found out soon enough but it was a very scary time :-(
Will let you know what happens. :(

Oh my god, I would be traumatized if I had a very ill dog in hospital due to someone else's stupidity.
However, I would not have left a dog with someone without discussing this "sore" and would have had a vet visit before I went away leaving the dog with someone else.

What a horrendous thing to happen. Fingers x here too for him to pull through :(

thinking about your friends dog and hope he pulls through ...I am speechless....

Just checked to see if you know how he is doing poor little thing

That's awful. Sending positive thoughts to the poor little dog
Shocking!!!! This has made my blood run cold! Oh the poor little love! How stupid can some people be just beggers belief! He's in the best place now! Fingers and paws are all crossed here!xx
Hi all,
Well apparently he is now home from the vets and although is rather washed out, he is fine. Im not sure what treatment he had in the vets as all my colleague said was that he had been on a drip and been given something into his stomach via a tube (me, Id know what was given, the dose, the side effects, everthing, however I suppose not everyone is like me...). She said that her 'friend' had given the dog ibuprofen as her own dog was currently receiving ibuprofen? tablets from the vet and had an ibuprofen injection, so she thought it would be okay. The only thing I can think of is that the dog was prescribed metacam or something and the vet described it as being like ibuprofen.
Needless to say...the dog will be coming to me next time and is now on antiflammatories for his leg, proper prescribed ones for dogs!
Phew and thank you for all your help.
Its like having babies isnt it. Only worse, JR are tenacious little things I bet he had a stomach flush - I always (like you) know what mine have had, how much when and why...
I bet he will not limp much now in case someone gives him another tablet!! Bless

A lot of us are! :-) :-)
Glad he's recovering.
That's a very high dose for a small dog, no wonder he had the reaction. Makes you wonder if they were given on an emty tum as well to make it that bad so quickly. Hope they carry on recovering.
At least they're going to someone sensible next time. i wouldn't dream of doing that to someone elses pet.
