This petition is asking for the government to set up and enforce a database for dogs in this country. There would be identification of puppies before sale and change of owner would have to be kept updated. Something needs to be done about the problem with unidentified dogs that are not controlled or looked after, often ending up being dumped and possibly destroyed.
I know that some people will argue that only responsible people will comply with it but they probably said the same before car registration was introduced.

No more like the so-called DDA....
The government set up and was supposed to enforce a ban on Pit Bulls...it never happened, in fact, there has been such a flagrant flouting of this law with the explosion of 'Ban-dogs' its a joke!

Police are getting severely cut back, are too scared to go into the inner city ghettos to challenge these owners ( let alone their breeders) and will, no doubt, see any more dog legislation as very low priority.

Umm and thy were right as there are many unregistered uninsured cars out there and will probably be the same people who wouldn't register their dogs.  The way this country is being run many of us may not be able to afford to keep dogs etc. anyway shortly.

hmmm..this sound a good idea in principle but there is already an registration system out there - the kc one ! -

The KC one is only for pedigree puppies or those that want to compete with their dogs. There is also no enforcement for change of owner or change of address which needs to be tied in with compulsory ID.

Actually you are wrong. The KC have several registers for pedigree and non pedigree one of which is the Companion Dog Club, for pet owners. My dog club promotes Companion Dog Club membership to all our owners regardless of whether or not the dog is a pedigree and whether or not they plan to compete with it.

Sorry I had heard of their Companion Dog Club but I have never known anyone who has joined it.

I'm a member - I didn't think it was exactly a dog register as such though, as my dog is KC registered as normal anyway. It's just something so you can do the CDC class at companion shows, get invited to enter for the competitions at Discover Dogs, and get various pet owner type information sent over occasionally.

My daughter has a rescue dog registered with the Club and she does not compete at all but likes to have the dog registered there, as do most of my club members.

I have a cross breed rescue and never knew that he could be registered with the KC?  Is this for all dogs, I was under the impression it was for pedigrees only??

There are various registers which crossbreeds can be registered on, one is the Companion Dog Club others are for people who like to work their dogs in flyball, obedience, working trials and agility. The Companion Dog Club is run like a club. As another poster said you can enter your dog at a companion dog show to compete for a place at Scrufts. One of my club members won the Handsome Dog class at Scrufts last autumn

Toddy is a rescue dog who has had a lot of problems to overcome, he was rescued from a puppy farm he had been locked in a van with blacked out windows. The rescue organisation told the new owner that they thought he was the most traumatised dog they had ever seen. He is now working towards his Bronze KC good citizens award.

That was so well said Mandy! Why, I wonder, can't everyone see how badly so many British dogs are treated? Once upon a time the UK was THE place to look for any top class live stock, including dogs. Now the UK is merely a laughing stock!!

KC papers have no legal significance. I assume the idea of the petition is to make people permanently, legally responsible for the dogs that they breed/own. Including cross-breeds. Rescues are over-flowing with not only crossbreeds but also unwanted breeding stock and pedigree dogs.
