I have found powdered Baby Rice is excellent as it can be mixed with a little milk and teaspooned into the baby puppies if they are not old enough to lap for themselves. Rather a long messy job but the effects are worthwile. A tiny amount of finely minced raw tripe will get them interested in meat and not give them the runs.

I'm sure more experienced people will be along shortly Jo to help you x

I would be tempted to use tripe as I have never known that to upset any tummies... yours should be able to cope with this :-)

Hope it all goes ok, if they really aren't getting enough from mum you will just have to stop putting it off, like you say, and do the weaning and keep fingers crossed. I always come on here to see how your pups are doing, hopefully it will be good news of firmer poos and happy full tummies!

A tube of Prokolin paste normally sorts out the runny poos as long as they haven't been caused by any kind of infection. I have never used Nature Diet but tried Royal Canin starter food with my last litter and it is definitely the best weaning food I have ever used. I like to give the pups a little minced beef as well. Good luck.

Hope its worked for you.  Should take a little of the hard work off for you if you get them eating.

poor mist she has had it tough. xx

hope you're getting some rest as well now.

Fingers crossed for the feeding.

I wouldnt worry too much about the poo being runny , is mum still on the antibiotics ? as this could be the reason, as long as puppies are lively, putting on weight, eating and toileting I wouldnt panic. I think it would firm up when they are weaned.
I would maybe lay of the rice and milk and try a little nature diet warmed and softened with a fork a couple of times a day you could add a little boiled cooled water to make it a little bit more runny to start .

hi roni no mums not on AB's now ,i gave them nature diet with milk , i will try it with water tomorrow only gave 1 lot this morning to see how they go, tbh i havnt seen all them poo cus mist is cleaning them up still ,1 of the girls has just pooed and its sloopy and looks like they have worm burden :(
as i was writeing this i saw her pooing! i wormed mum before mateing then started her day 40 but she didnt have it 2days before pups and the 2 days after couldnt get her to eat
pups were wormed at 2 weeks but started with bad runs and and some were being sick with drontol puppy so carnt use that again (never had this problem before) so not sure what to do now im sure their like this because of worms now!!
but was only done 5 days ago its a long time before 4weeks :( think im going to have to ring vets tomorrow to see what they say.mist was wormed 2 days after pups cus of them being poorly and didnt want to much for them with it going though her milk.

oh dear... sounds like its the worm burden causing the runs... never had that before so cant advise ...I only use panacur on the puppies and drontal xl  for Mum , I worm mum just before the mating then when the puppies are wormed at 3 wks 5wks and then 8 wks (if puppies leave at 7 wks I usually give new owners  a drontal tab from vet rather than them mess about with the panacur)

Cant you ring the emergency vet for advice rather than waiting until tomorrow as it may make puppies sick if they have a heavy worm burden?
I know my vet give advice over the phone?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 10:04 UTC
Rang the vets they told me to wait 5days then worm them then because of what happend with the drontal ,so thats what im going to do dont want to risk any more problems xxx
- By king of bling Date 24.01.11 10:08 UTC
sounds good x

i gave them nature diet with milk
I never feed milk with meat......
And I've always used Drontal puppy at 3,5 and 7 weeks thinking that the pups are more substancial by 3 weeks, always on an empty stomach and have never had any problems. :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 10:15 UTC
ive always done it at 2 weeks with drontal and never had a problem :(

been thinking about this..you said you gave drontal at 2 wks so they must have had worms (I know all puppies have worms) I mean a heavier burden because mum missed a dose...but the drontal has probably done its job ..are the worms dead?
- By king of bling Date 24.01.11 10:50 UTC
Don't worry Jo what works for one person might nor work for another xx
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 11:40 UTC
what i saw roni was a hair type looking??? coming out with the poo (sorry about this)
it wasnt moveing just long ,ive always be told when useing drontal you dont see warms because it desolves them??? not like other wormers you see what comes out an i wrong ???
xxxx
3 of the pups were sick after having the wormer and have hard tums some dont.
- By tiegold [gb] Date 24.01.11 11:53 UTC
Hi WL, I work in a rescue centre and we get many puppies in with worm burdens. We used to use drontal puppy suspension and if they had worms they definately came out of them dead. In some cases when the pups were really bad they would just come out alive, even without them having a poo. I dont think Drontal dissolves them, or I have never heard of this.
We now use panacur paste/granules for the puppies as this treats giardia aswell.
I really hope your puppies pick up soon, with any luck the next lot of wormer will sort them out but I would be tempted to use panacur this time rather than the drontal...Im sure the panacur still needs to be done over 3 days, (but havent used it for a while so not sure) so it may be a little more gentle on their tummies???? Just a thought Good luck
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 24.01.11 12:01 UTC
When you say you gave nature diet with milk, hopefully you mean goats milk or special puppy milk, cows milk isn't good for dogs but I'm sure you know this!
- By STARRYEYES Date 24.01.11 13:57 UTC Edited 24.01.11 14:02 UTC
I dont think they actually disolve worms ..I think they die in the stomach and are broken up by the stomach bile and come out as poo and that is why they are not worms as such . (dont think I excplained that very well ) anyway.... I think they come out as worms when mum hasnt been wormed , causing a larger than normal burden.
I agree with tiegold I would use panacur next time I know its a pain giving it over 3 days and having to weight the pup but I find it very effective.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 15:28 UTC
hi lucy yes it was lactol :) xx
im going to use panacur next time ,do i weigh pup every time (3days) before worming or just at 1st day of worming and give the amount needed for that weight over the 3 days xxx

thanku regaud the worms xxx
- By STARRYEYES Date 24.01.11 15:49 UTC
personally I weigh every time but thats just me being obsessive!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 16:42 UTC
ok thanks roni xxx
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 16:59 UTC
just had thought! i have to worm mum at same time so what do i do her with???
she normaly has drontal XL but this will go into her milk ,never used any other on her about from 40days any ideas plz xxx
- By STARRYEYES Date 24.01.11 17:12 UTC
I worm mum pre mating then again when the puppies are 3 wks  , puppies panacur  , mum with drontal xl I have never had a problem.
I do it before mating and after puppies are born so the 40th day of pregnancy  doesnt come into it for me .
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 24.01.11 17:33 UTC
I have always used Panacur 10% suspension for both bitch and pups. I start at 40 days for mam until 2 days after whelping and the pups are wormed at 2/3 wks depending on weight. So far "touch wood" we've never had any worms in either mam or pups. I also worm mam with pups at 2 weeks etc.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 24.01.11 17:40 UTC
so u give mum panicur same has pups on the same day??? is mum wormed over 3days with panicur or just 1 dose ??? and how much would mum need??? sorry never gave it at this time xxx
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 25.01.11 20:01 UTC
I just give the dose as advised by my vet to mum and pups over 3 days...
As to the amount you give then it depends on the weight of the bitch and pups..but its on the side of the box, I havent got any in (must get some) but if I remember correctly then its 0.5ml per 2kg of bodyweight. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG.
