Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Panacur liquid suspension worm puppies every 3 weeks???????
- By sofie [gb] Date 22.01.11 15:49 UTC
Hi,

I've got a litter of small breed puppies 5 the problem I'm having is I've always been told to worm at 2, 4, 6, 8 etc. weeks i.e every 2 weeks from 2 weeks old but I've just read the instructions on the back of the panacur liquid suspension 2.5 % that you've to give it from 2 weeks of age then at 5 weeks of age which means it's 3 weeks should I just go ahead and worm them or just listen to the instructions on the panacur box and does anyone know the reasons why it would be every 3 weeks instead of 2 weeks in panacur there 4 weeks old now thanks

i would do what it says on the box :) and worm at 5weeks if you did it at 2 weeks xx
drontal puppy is from 2 weeks and every 2 weeks till 12weeks ,different wormers so always do what it tells you to but saying that if you think pups ahve a heavy worm burden then cheak with your vet 1st xx

Some wormers need to be given two weakly as they deal only with the adult stages or advanced larval stages.

Panacur deals with larval stages so monthly dosage is enough normally, but with puppies who are the main carriers of roundworms as they are passed on through the placenta and milk more frequent worming is needed.

Now I worm my bitches in pregnancy with Panacur which is supposed to minimise transference to the pups by 98%.

I was instructed by my vet to worm at 3 and 7 weeks, the one time I did it at 3, 5, and 8 I had problems, so have always done 3 and 7, and then 11, and monthly to 6 months.

Haven't used 2.5% but with the 10% I worm at 2, 5 and 8 weeks. If I use Drontal Puppy then it's 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks.

I use the same as Trialist.  It is more economical to use Panacur 10% as all you do with the 2.5% is give them 4 times the dose!  I prefer the smaller dose, as it makes it easier to get down them!  And my breeds are small like yours.  I have never used the 2 weekly worming regime, but I've never used Drontal.

I treat at 2 weeks, 5 weeks, 8 weeks and 11 weeks.  So yes, follow the guidance on the box.  :-)

If they're 4 weeks now, you are perfecly safe to wait until they're 5 weeks before their next 3 day course.

It's actually easier to use the Panacur paste on very young puppies, as it comes ready made in a syringe, like the wormers used for horses. Just open their mouth put the syringe in and squirt. No mess No fuss. Half the time they haven't realised you've done it!
It's easy to work out the dosage as it's marked on the side of the syringe. up to 1 kilo is one turn on the wheel on the bottom of the syringe.Worming should be done at 2, 5 & 8 weeks then once a month until 6 months old. Then every 3 months.

I do the same with the liquid, it's just runnier ;)

But if they don't shut their mouths and then shake their heads it all flies out again. and everything ends up covered. Ask me how I know this.

Ah there is a trick.  You hold the muzzle lightly closed, get the tip of the syringe in the corner of the mouth between the teeth(when they have them, and keeping the mouth closed ensure they swallow, allowing them to partly open their mouths so they can lick before opening their mouths and shaking. :)

thanks. will try that next time.
