Topic Dog Boards / Health / retrievers and yorkies?
- By sunny [gb] Date 28.12.02 20:31 UTC
Hi everyone,

Sonny is almost five months old and continues to do well.....my question is:
I would really love to have a yorkie at some point in the future - I always have but my husband wasn't keen on a smaller dog!
My concern is the interaction between Sonny and a much smaller dog. Sonny would be a few months older by the time I got (if) one and wonder if anyone has any experiences that they can share.
Look forward to the replies.

Hi,
We used to have Goldens and a Yorkie and they got on great. Our yorkie wasn't tiny she was quite big. There was never any problem even when our oldest Golden had a litter. We kept a pup from the litter and she kept sleeping in Mitzy's bed (yorkie). She even kept trying to squeeze into it when she was nearly fully grown  :p: :) :D :D :D

Thanks everyone for the replies re Goldens and Yorkies.
I will probablly wait until Sonny's a little older. It'll be good for Sonny to realize he's not the only dog who can be spoiled rotten!:):)
I would never have believed that I could get so dotty over a dog but there you go:)

I would wait until the larger breed is grown up and mentally mature. It is very easy for a puppy to hurt a much smaller pup as it simply doesn't realise, wheras an adult will be mature enough to understand a small pup needs to be treated gently. Otherwise they will not be much company for each other until both adult, as would need to be kept apart a lot of the time for safety sake.

Greetings,
You could also look into adopting an older yorkie (1+ years old). Stay away from those who purposely breed "minis" or "extremely tiny" style of Yorkies (1-3 1/2 pounds). The Yorkie breed profile reads basically 7 pounds and under. There are those that do exceed that weight just by accident. The breed long ago was set around 22 pounds, in case you're interested.

They will get along with another dog, especially if your GR is as good natured as the breed is supposed to be. If you get a bitch, it will be natural for her to rule the roost, no matter her age, especially being a terrier. :) But if she's already an adult, you won't have to worry about injuries to a growing pup whilst they play.
hth and good luck
