Absolute minimum of 7 but preferably 8.
I would say as most people want to pick up on a weekend day, that if yours are 7 weeks next wednesday (meaning they must be 6 weeks old today), the earliest would be the following saturday. So your buyer has another 10 days to 2 weeks to wait yet.

Depends on the breed! One of mine can easily go at 7 ½ weeks old, but my toybreed I'd never let go before 14 weeks. Generally speaking toys need to stay much longer than larger breeds.
mine start to leave at 7 weeks i space it out over 4-5 days so mum dont get to stressed!!

I would say 8 weeks for most breeds. Although the breed club of one of my toy breeds does state 12 weeks.
I honestly think 6 weeks is out of order, and have actually berated one breeder that I know mentioning a pup leaving so young.

I let mine go from 71/2 weeks onwards but theres a part of me that feels that 11 to 12 weeks would be better because they are still learning so much from their Mother. I'm also really concious of what effect it is having on Mum as her litter dwindles....and I'm convinced that she knows they are gone and is looking for them for a while....

thanks for the bex very interesting.xxx
I am sure it is a very good article but I had to give up as I couldn't cope with the falling leaves. Probably should be another thread but why oh why do people feel the need to spoil a good website with these irritating effects.

I wouldn't contemplate letting any pup go before 8 weeks, no matter if a tiddly squat pup or a giant breed. I firmly believe that the pup is best with Mum & sibblings up to this age as they are learning so much dog language/manners from them.
There's a big sector in the obedience/agility world (and probably show) who want their pups at 6 weeks ... they think they are basically getting a stronger bond with the pup. I wont say on forum what I think of that view.
5 of my pups went between 8 and 10 weeks but the last pup went at 4 months. She was booked and that was the arrangement to hold her on for that time. I know her well and I have met the other pups. All have excellent dog language, all are excellent in the social/work situations they're placed, and no one can tell me that the pup who went at 4 months does not have an equally strong bond with their owner as the pup who went at 8 weeks. I would not let a pup go a day before 8 weeks.
The pups that go around the 8 week mark go to the more experienced homes. I am seriously thinking of putting 10weeks as the minimum age they leave next litter. Having seen litters of pups and watched the ones that stay until 10weeks I do believe they go off far more confident.

My pups are exactly the same age and are going next saturday at 71/2 weeks old. Saying that, they are a very advanced medium breed. I definately think it depends not only on the breed but each litter too. My previous litter (of same breed) was not as advanced as this one as OH mentioned that he thought I had my dates wrong as he would be happy for them to leave this weekend(not happening!!). I only have 9 days left with my babies and I am going to enjoy every last second. One of my pups is leaving on the Friday morning instead of the Saturday but I am OK as they are not novices and it's only a day. I don't know how our girl will be as she is still very much involved with this lot, sleeping with them at night and feeding them quite often.
I also breed large breed dogs and would be happy for them to leave anytime after 7 weeks too. I worry that much longer than that and they are harder to settle into their solitary lives as they are so well bonded with their littermates. It's always worked for me and my pups and I have never had any temprement issues with them leaving at this age.

My pups never leave before 8 weeks, although advanced, eating drink no problems, toilet trained to newspaper there is no way I would let my medium breed leave before 8 weeks of age.

Doesn't it also depend on the homes they are going to?
For example, there is a big difference between an experienced home which has several other adult dogs for learning how to be a dog from...
...and a novice home where the pup will be the only dog there, and probably won't meet another dog until after vaccinations are complete at 10 wks (if going out immediately) or even later.
For the latter, I would much rather prefer to keep pups till 8 wks. For the former, I'd be fine with 7 wks.

In my breed 9 weeks at the earliest.
I let mine go anytime from 7 weeks onwards (but they are all going to experienced homes, not pet homes), large breed (working). I think developmentally this is a really good time for them to go, but I do find it hard to chose the one I want to keep at that age (mind you it would probably hard at any age!!!).

We have bought pups home at varying ages - we are experienced owners and generally known well to the people where the pups are from. Youngest was 7 weeks and I have to admit I really preferred this because we had a week of just lounging around the house, settling my boy in before we even thought about injections etc.
My Akita I picked up at 9 weeks and wish I had her 2 weeks earlier as she was in kennels and wasn't as fussed over as my other dogs, I think getting her earlier would have benefitted her hugely.
I have picked up a couple of others at 9 weeks and they have been absolutely fine although we missed the week of just completely settling at home before desperately needing to get out in the big wide world. At whichever age all the pups grew up well adjusted and all fantastic temperaments so it made no difference in that respect.
