Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Poorly bitch 2 weeks after whelping!

Hi Guys,
having another nightmare here with my poor girl. Pups are two weeks and yesterday mum was vomiting and really not herself.  I also noticed her urine was dark yellow and contained blood. I rushed her to the vet last night who suspected she has some kind of infection possible due to her not 'being totally cleared out' as he put it. She was given intravenous antibiotics and today seems brighter but still not 100%. The pups where allowed to feed from her after 3 hrs from having the medication and they seem fine. She seems to have her appetitie back and ate a little nature diet puppy this morning and so far hasn't been sick. Her urine is still concentrated but she is drinking water. Taking her back to my vet today to check on her. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Just wanted to add she also had a poo this morning which was fine. I was worried that she had ate something and might of had a blockage.
Thanks

Hi Claire  sorry to hear about the problems you are having...just wondered if mum is still cleaning up after puppies as eating a lot of poo can make mum vomit esp now that the puppies will be due worming in a week .
Did you take mum for the oxytocin injection after the birthing had finished...if not the vet may have meant she may have retained a placenta, did you count them ? Sounds like a water infection so the antibiotics should knock that on its head.
Hope she is better soon.

Thanks Roni,
it has been a nightmare two weeks. She is cleaning and feeding them well. She had her last puppy at the vets with oxytocin but he didn't give her anything after and not sure if the last placenta was passed or not. I did see the other placentas but not sure about the last one. She is also still passing jelly like blood discharge. Hopefully get her sorted today.
Thanks Roni x

I also thought urine infection so hopefully it will clear up soon enough but if not then if it were my girl I would be asking for a scan just to check that there isn't anything left behind thats causing this. Bitches can still pass blood for many weeks after giving birth, my girl with her last litter was still passing small amounts at 5 weeks, in fact she flicked it all over a puppy buyers leg as she turned around quickly one day....it was very amusing lol. Fingers crossed for a quick and straight forward recovery.

Sorry to hear you girl is poorly, my girl had post partum metritis after her last litter but once on AB's picked up so will keep everything croosed that your girl does the same.

What is it with our girls ?? They NEVER read the book when it come to text book time to mate them but they are excellent at reading the list of complications and giving them a whirl !! Breeding .... we must be mad !!

Your right Klb!!!! lol Defo mad  but they are worth it!
Not going to start weaning them till next week Jo probably Wed but might start Tues. They are doing well off mum's milk and seem satisfied at the moment. I am going to wean them onto Nature Diet puppy any advice about what to mix in with it milk wise? I have Royal canin baby dog milk or Toplife puppy milk?
