Lacey is now almost 9 months old and will probably be due to come into season soon. I have never had a big dog before and I am worried about her coming into season. I never want to breed from her and want to get her speyed. Should I have it done before her season or wait until after? I am worried about the potential problems that may arise. I have only had Yorkies before and they were very easy to look after as far as seasons were concerned but I have to admit, I am panicing a bit now.

I am not sure if I have posted this in the right place, so if it is wrong then I am sorry. I am never really sure where to post.

Debbie, vets seems to advise different times :( In my opinion the best time to get her spayed would be three months after her first season, at that point in the cycle is the safest option, and I also feel it is better to let the bitch have her first season and be mentally and physically mature. I have heard of vets spaying and neutering at 12 weeks!!!!!! and then a lot recommend as soon as they are 6 months! But my own vet advises people 3 months after the season. HTH Julie:)

Hi Julie,
That is what my vet has said too and Molly is being spayed on 9th Jan. I am dreading it but she had a phantom after her first season so she needs to have the op. going by BOTB and the vet.

Debbie can I just ask why you think a season in a larger dog is going to cause more problems than in a smaller breed? Gillian

Muddydogs is right - wait till she's midway between seasons. This is when her hormones will be at their most "placid" and the blood supply to the uterus is at its lowest, so there should be the least risk of operative and post-operative complications.

At 9 months she will probably be about to come into season any time, so keep an eye on her! And there should be little difference between a medium sized bitch like a golden retriever and a tiny bitch like a Yorkie, seasons-wise. Some are very clean, and others not.
