I was just wondering having only bred one litter since joining the KC ABS what happened re Feedback forms.

Is there a way of finding out how many forms get returned.

What happens if none of the owners bother returning forms?

How do the Kennel club know that the forms are even given out f the new owners don't return them.

I suspect that as around half of new owners don't bother to register the pups into their name, that perhaps they are equally as unlikely to return the feedback forms.

Any experiences, and do the kennel club let the breeder have any feedback on feedback ;)

Hi,  Kc can tell if buyers have received questionaire, as they corrolate packs bought to the amount of puppys registered, smacked legs all round if you dont order enought packs for the puppies you have registered.  Feedback forms were shown to us when we had our AB visit, (all good thank heavens), any that dont come up to speed are investigated we were told, We had had around 50-60% sent in, but as you say a number of owners never bother to even transfer the pupppy into their name.  So unlikely to fill in a questionaire.  Thats our experience anyway

they can know how many wallets you have bought (had thought it would make more sense to print stuff off) but they have no way of knowing they were actually GIVEN to new owners.

I suppose they could write to the ones that do bother to transfer pups to their name, but if none do they have no way of knowing who bought the puppies.

In my last litter of 5 only one UK based owner has transfered the pup, another was exported, the remaining 3 have left the pusp in my name.

When a regional advisor does a visit one of the things discussed are these forms. Some are brought out to show you and the KC certainly take note of what is on them. The KC want as many back as possible and ways are discussed to try and get more people to respond. As with many things new puppy buyers often can't be bothered. They have bought their pup and if it is purely a pet they want to do nothing else. (or pay for anything else). It is surprising how many don't transfer the ownership, microchip etc and returning that questionaire doesn't happen. One good suggestion is to put a stamp on the envelope for them...a little thing but sometimes it helps.... Another person told me that she tried to make her buyers see the paperwork in a similar fashion to that of a car. Everyone knows that they have to transfer the paperwork of a car into their name for insurance purposed and so on...make them think of a dog in the same way...equally important. Most of us are shocked at how many dogs are still in our name when looking at the KC site even dogs that dies 20 years ago and it is high time the KC divised a way of us being able to update it ourselves to denote dogs that have died or been sold leaving a comprehensive list of animals we actually have (just as a car can be marked as SORN) another thing that would help a regional advisor no end.

I wish they would do just that.  I get upset every time I log in and see my very old lady still listed.

I informed them of the deaths of both my oldest girls and they have it on record but their names are still on the list of dogs registered in my name, which as you say is upsetting, especially closer to the time of their deaths.

I have tried to impress the importance of the KC reg and getting it transfered, but the only ones that seem to do it are those who already show, or those who are going to go with the KC insurance cover (up to now very few).

This is what got me wondering about the return of the forms as I happened to be going through the ABS paperwork and noticed that I am supposed to use a different Form 1 to register any pups.

Thing is I printed off the normal form 1 which the stud owner has signed, so I will just have to send it in with covering letter, the dogs certified pedigree (which cost me $32 in the UDA) and a copy of his Optigen prcd-PRA test certificate to ensure any pups have the correct Hereditsary clear status on their paperwork.  It costs an extra £20 to register a litter sired by an overses stud.

I notice I have 21 bitches registered in my name of which including the deceased two there should only be 7, and I have no males, and they have me down for 16 dogs.

That is 30 dogs I no longer own and two that have died.

I did bring this up at a meeting once that the KC are missing out on a chance of invaluable data by not letting us record dates (and if possible cause) of death of all dogs. Someone would be able to see that any given breed seemed to have a lot of deaths at say 6 yerars old and worry why they are dying so young or if a tremendous amount are dying from the same complaint. I can't see why it's so hard. The onus can be on us the breeder to "push on" the pups from our end not wait for the new owners to declare them...just a simple "sold" on line. Sometimes I think puppy people don't really care if they have a pedigree never mind a registration all they want is their "baby" the rest is irrelevant to them and just another expense. £20 here and £15 there adds up when you have already paid a great deal of money for a pup. A lot of those forms do not give much feedback as the puppy buyer just ticks all the boxes yes yes yes all down it, the only ones that are worth having back are the ones where they take the trouble to write a few sentences down. Although it is upsetting to see our old dogs still there and annoying to think other people viewing this think we have 55 animals... from the regional advisor point of view they arrive at the house with that same list. If it was a true reflection of the animals that should be living there then there could be a head count. As it is there is no way at all of knowing if half the animals are temporarily hiding in a neighbour's for the duration of the visit. If they know 9 dogs are supposed to be there then 9 need to be accounted for and equally they don't expect to see 15!

Yes, I think we should be able to do something - I have Henry still listed who died in June, and the puppy I sold 3 years ago!

As a part of the 'Mate Select' initiative, the KC are planning to open up their database for breeders to record information such as date of death and onset of certain diseases of individuals which they own.
Once verified, they will be added to the EBV (Estimated Breeding Values) of each individual to which it affects.

I joined the scheme shortly after is was set up and have given a wallet to every puppy I have sold/re-homed since and have never, as yet had any communication from the KC.

Going slightly off topic - I had a litter in Nov 09 from a bitch I joinly own.  I prepared all paperwork etc and didn't think twice about using the wallets etc - but when litter registered on KC Puppy Sales List - they were not under the AB scheme - obviously you have to register seperately as joint breeders - more money to pay out! 

We are repeating this mating shortly and I suppose we'll register jointly and pay again!!  Although, saying that I have a full list already so no need to advertise, but it would be nice for the new owners to have the purple Registration Forms - worth paying another £20 for - probably in my opinion.  Can only assume those new puppy owners didn't send their forms in or the KC will have reprimanded me for using them wrongly!

Perhaps & it is just a thought that has popped into my head, as far as transfers are concerned the breeder could get the owner to sign on the day & send off say a week or so after the pup has left??? I have never done this & as I say it is only a thought, this would not cover the feedback form though.
