Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Worried - Swollen Testicle
- By JaybyJasper [gb] Date 13.01.11 09:19 UTC
I have a 10 week old puppy that has suddenly developed a very swollen testicle. I have an appointment with the vet later today but wondered if anyone else has experienced this ? He seems fine in himself so I don't think it's an infection. I think it's more likely that it has been bruised when playing with his littermates or I suppose he could have fallen and bashed it.
Of course he is the pup that I wanted to keep for showing so it will be very disappointing if he has to have this testicle removed but I am worried that if it has been damaged, it may cause him problems later on.
Any advice much appreciated.

Sorry to hear about this pup, as you say it may just be fluid from a bump or one of the litter mates may have bitten it. As it could be almost anything it is best to wait for the vet to check as anything we suggest may worry you unnecessarily.

Thanks Jackie - although not sure I could be any more worried than I already am !

Could be as the other posters have mentioned i.e. it's been nibbled by a littermate and it's swelling/fluid or possibly it could be an inguinal hernia as it is a symptom in boys to have abdominal fat or contents enter the scrotum when there is a hernia.

Your vet will no doubt advise accordingly.  Hope all goes well and your vet puts your mind at rest.

Not long to go and hopefully your mind will be put at rest, sure that he will keep his bits but whether he will have a condition that precludes you from breeding with him depends on what has caused it. Please let us know what the problem is when you know so we can be of help to others should they find themselves in the same situation.

The vet thinks it is inflammation caused by a nip from another puppy and doesn't think it feels like an inguinal hernia. We have a week of antibiotics and anti-inflamatory meds so will just have to keep our fingers crossed that swelling goes down.
I really hope he will be ok and ends up with "two apparently normal testicles" so that he can be shown but would not mind if he was precluded from breeding or had reduced fertility. Is there a particular condition that you are thinking of Nova that could have caused this ? Thanks

TBH I thought it would be fluid caused by a bite by another pup, like the vet, so that is no problem providing it can be bought under control but had it been a hernial then it perhaps would be better not to use him at stud as the condition may have been hereditary.

Thanks Jackie - I wasn't sure if there was something else I should have been considering but here's hoping we are all correct about the fluid. I picked out this lad when he was born and have never changed my mind about him. Testicles will probably be just fine and his bite will go wrong or something knowing my luck !!!!!!

Just a quick update for anyone who  is interested. After a week on AB's and Metacam, the enlarged testicle has gone back down to almost normal size. It is still very slightly larger than the other one and feels a tiny bit harder but the vet was happy to stop the treatment and just monitor it for a few more days.
Looks like inflammation from a nip by a littermate was the cause. Thanks to those who gave advice.

That is normal the are not usually the same size but I would want it to be as soft.

Glad it was easy to deal with and he is now on the mend.
