ok pups are over 24h old now most of you know what kind of whelping my has just had, shes still bleeding an awful lot that dont bother me ,the vet gave her oxitocin and 2 pups were born ,she has parted with 2 after births the thing is when you walk out the room then come back in it smells a little fishy!!?? is that normal i carnt remember from last time and when she goes out she is straning alittle ,shes not panting or stressed and lays down feeding her pups happy ,shes eating little bits but not drinking a great deal but still shes drinking ,just not sure about the smell really and shes in such a mess ive tried to clean her but shes bleeding alot so every time i get her up to take her out theres more blood over her back end shes got a thick coat its all mattered now with blood so wondering if most of the smell is from her being so dirty from birth the only way i can get her clean now is a good shower but i carnt do that yet surely? also i dont see her cleaningherself much so it all over the place.

By 'blood' do you mean old dark red blood ......this is fairly normal as all the structures containing the placental blood vessels drain.

or bright, light red fresh blood - (like the colour of the stars next to my username)?...not so good and needs immediate vet attention
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.01.11 10:28 UTC
if i wipe her with cloth and its dark thats ok if its very red ill ring vets ,im going to wipe her now thanks tooolz xx

Hi WL and congrats on your litter. I have this trouble with my girls after whelping. They have long fluffy coats too. I do try to clip away as much as I can from the trousers but they still smell. I usually resort to standing her in the bath and showering the messy bits as soon as poss.(2 days) then getting the blaster out and drying well. Every time the bitch gets up for a pee break I have a bowl of warm water and a cloth and wipe her down before returning to pups. It should calm down a bit in the next 24 hrs but as has been said if it is BRIGHT red then Vets NOW!!
Hope all progesses well for you all.

thankyou toooles and merlot.
its dark :) thank goodness i think shes sick of the vets now :(

hi merlot i think im going to have to shower her she is in such a state!!! i too cliped her and het back of her tail :-O but never seen so much mess even when 1 of my girls had 13 pups! different breed thinner coat so was easier to wash her down tho...she stresses so much when trying to wash her god only knows what she will be like going upstars for a shower :( but i dont have a blaster! ive only dryed her with hair dryer and it takes along time to dry her :( so im abit worried about doing it, might just keep washing her down and then shower in 3-4 days time il just have to see how she goes.
again thankyou to you both for quick reply xxx

Hi WL I think if you just give her a really good rub down after a shower (Just do the back end) and a blast with the H/D as long as the room and box are nice and warm the pups will be fine. I have never had a problem, Mum always makes the pups wetter by constantly washing them!!! and they soon dry in a nice warm environment.

Over 30 years I've had bitches with hardly any discharge after whelping and others who were so heavy that if it had been my first whelping I would have been very alarmed!
As the others say, if it's dark then it's OK.  Yes it does smell of old blood but not foul, if that makes sense?
I usually sponge with water containing a little shampoo and then rinse.  I had one that I actually showered her back end everyday she was so messy! :(
Then just dry as well as you can with towels, blaster or dryer and then I increase the temperature in the whelping room a little until she's dry.
Obviously keep an eye on the pups and make sure that they aren't getting wet or cold. :)

WL when my girl had a very similar labour and whelp puppies born out the sack , she also wasnt quite right after the births , smelly , heavy bleeding which I wasnt happy with she ended up with a terrible  infection , (bit grusome)( but she expelled it more after peeing it was like massive clots of puss is the only way I can explain it) I personally think she retained a dead pup although the vet wouldnt have it , Mum was eating and drinking seemed reasonably well  ....she had to go on two courses of antibiotics and her milk dried up resulting in me hand rearing I was just glad she got through it .
This may be a completely different story for you but I would look out for any  infection in the next few days.....felt I had  to alert you and hope all goes well.

Congratulations on your litter White Lilly. My girl still has a bit of dIscharge (dark red) from her litter born Boxing Day, I have been told this is normal, someone please tell me if it isn't. She smelt too, I trimmed her trousers and tried to just wipe her a little, eventually washed her back end in the shower after about a week. She is still a bit smelly. She is tired and had a quick delivery (2 3/4 hours), she was restless the day before and I don't think she really slept for about three days. This is my first litter and I am learning all the time, the pups eyes started opening yesterday and they are up on their legs and pretty mobile now, growing so fast, amazing.

Hope your pups progress well and that mum gets some rest.

dancer..they do smell a little keep her clean then give a bath when puppies are weaned or after they have gone.
As you can see my my avatar I have a long coated breed and usually wash the rear dipping the back legs in a bowl washing the bum, towel drying then a quick whiz over with the dryer.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.01.11 12:20 UTC
What I do with mine is get a sponge and a bowl of warm water with no rinse baby bath liquid, and sponge her down.  Then rub any e3xcess off with a dry old towel (chuck in wash after).

in between times I use baby wipes.

You may find that some of the birth fluids will have soaked into the coat and may have irritated the skin in the thigh and bum/hock area so check carefully once you have her sponged clean.

If there is soreness I have used plain Vaseline and this soothes an heals and though it makes the coat a bit greasy doesn't hurt it and will comb out.

I also use Vaseline on any soreness on nose and lips.

There is a definite femine smell around whelping and after from all the various fluids.

I have like others found some bitches have hardly any loss and are easy to keep clean and others it's like an abattoir.

Also the amount and harshness of the waters varies, with some having loads of water and getting very sore from the contact on skin and others not at all.

Some have loss for a short time after whelping often gone in just a couple of weeks, and some have intermittent loss for up to 12 weeks.  All have been normal, and not ill.

I have had one bitch develop Mastitis with a badly infected mammary gland coming up within a couple of hours when pups were 10 days old on a Boxing day evening!!!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 07.01.11 12:32 UTC
dont know if you can remeber i had a friends girl here last xmas to whelp??? she got very bad sores and the smell from them was like rotting flesh :( i used sudo cream on them vets advised this and washed her down about 20times aday just warm water didnt take to long for it all to start healing poor girl all her coat came away with the sores she looked a mess but a year on last time i saw her her coat looks fab!
i will get some baby wipes thanks for that didnt think about them :-) xxx
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.01.11 12:45 UTC

> will get some baby wipes thanks for that didnt think about them :-) x

Make sure they are the hypoallergenic unscented ones.  great for toiletting pups or helping if she hasn't cleaned one very well in the first days.
- By kizziecat [gb] Date 07.01.11 20:59 UTC
I don't know anything about whelping but I know that my girl has problems with her anal glands that give off a fishy smell so it could be worth considering whether it's those.

Our rosie bleed for at least 3 weeks. i even took her vets after 5 days for a check and phoned them on a regular basis but they said she is fine and it will stop. she was fine after a while and was happy. Hope all is well with your girl and her litter
- By Freewayz [gb] Date 08.01.11 01:49 UTC
This is going to sound like a silly question....but I have to ask....just out of curiosity...

If a bitch is very messy after whelping can you not put on a pair of bitch pants with a maternity towel just for the first few days till it settles? Using Sudocreme if needed...
I know everything needs to come out...but if it is changed regular would it not be healthier and more hygienic for the pups not to have the after affects building up in the coat.

Like I say a silly question but one that came to mind while reading this thread
- By white lilly [gb] Date 08.01.11 05:33 UTC
ive never used them so not to sure what they look like lol but would they stop pups getting to her back teats?? plus i think my girl would go mad! if she had something like them on ;) shes a large breed dog that dont like anything on that shouldnt, i think it would drive her insane ,we are going to shower her this morning so she should feel alot better and il just keep washing her down and changeing the beding she dont even like me putting a towel under her she nudges away with pups still hanging on :) xxx
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 08.01.11 12:44 UTC
It's not something that I would do, I have to say.  Pups could get caught up in them and also not be able to feed off the lower nipples.  I would also be worried that if there was an infection there that they cd. make it worse?
- By Justine [gb] Date 08.01.11 18:52 UTC
My bitch had very heavy bleeding after whelping her litter. She'd had an Oxy jab during the birth and this happened when the pups were a week old. She got anaemic very quicky and after visiting the out of hours emergency vet, who was reluctant to open her up, he gave her large amounts of Vit k to try and stop it.

It did for a day but then she started again. We went back and as he felt her abdomen, it was fresh blood and was like somebody turning a tap on. He gave her another Oxy jab and more Vit k. He did say he may have to do an emergency spey but as she was so poorly, and pale, he was still hoping to try and build her blood count up more before risking opening her up. I started feeding the pups as her milk ran dry too.

The day after I went back to my own vet who decided that she needed surgery.  He opened her up and did an emergency spey. He found that she had ruptured an artery in one of uterine horns so although he had a few bleeds through the surgery, the rest of the op went well and the bleeding stopped.  It took about a month to get her colour back to normal, even with continuing with the Vit k.

Hopefully this is not the case with your bitch, but if it continues, dont risk leaving it. :)

- By qwerty Date 08.01.11 22:18 UTC
Poor girl. Did the vet say what was actually causing the bleeding. Hope she makes a swift recovery.

My friend had a litter last year and her bitch had to be spayed soon after delivery- she was able to feed the pups though was very tender and sore for the first few days- pretty sure same breed as yours too.

white lilly

first  {{{{  HUGS  }}}}   Bet you've had a gutsful!!

I can definitely say that your girl will be able to feed pups right away.  I had a large Yorkie bitch whelp 5 pups perfectly fine several years ago.  She was feeding them fine, but kept straining, and I took her in during the night, wouldn't wait until the morning.

I actually took her pups in a heated box with me.  When my girl was opened up, she had a pup with head caught and stuck under the ribcage.  Her contractions couldn't shift it.  It was very sad that the pup had died, but a relief that I realised that my girl hadn't finished.

When they called me into the operating theatre, my girl had been put in a heated container, to reduce shock.  She was very dopey, but starting to come round.  The vet had already removed the pups from their box and put them on mum.  As she had suckled them prior to her operation, I found it far less traumatic for her than having a section and then introducing pups to mum for the first time.

white lilly, try no to worry (easy for me to say) but my girl was absolutely fine.

Jean   xx

positive vibes for mist

- By white lilly [gb] Date 09.01.11 01:07 UTC
thanks guys ive been beside my self!
she is home now she still not awake well her eyes are open but she carnt move hubby had to carry her in to the car at the vets and into the house all 33kg of her :-O i carnt bring her around pups are feeding but going mad she hasnt drinken since dinner so her milk will be very little, im squeezing water into her mouth with a towel to see if this helps but i tink its just coming out ,the problem retained afterbirths and some kind of trauma from 1 of the pups being born ,:(

I know that you're tired but I wouldn't risk giving my puppies to anyone else - or risk infection.  My germs are different to your germs and whilst we're OK with our own ............

I just don't want you to have anymore problems...........
You've got a good man in your husband, and your daughter to help as best she can.  What area are you in?  Perhaps someone on here could look in and give you a break for a couple of hours?  Or even a bit of moral support would be nice eh?  Just remember that you've done the right thing every step of the way re the whelping. :)
