Topic Dog Boards / Health / 7 week old Lab with flow Murmur
- By pudding11 [gb] Date 05.01.11 13:12 UTC
Hi all, just after a bit of info. We plan to pick our Lab puppy up in a few days but the breeder called to say that a Flow murmur was detected and its Minor..... Can anyone offer advice? I plan to try to speak to the vet that checked the pup, but what is a Flow murmur and are they bad? from my readings its a very common condition that sorts its self out in a few weeks.....

I thought if anyone would know / be able to help you peeps would. I feel I would be worried sick about the pup and this would spoil the enjoyment

Speak to your own vet as well as it is much to  easy for a breeders vet to say oh yes it will be fine.
Also if it was me as the breeder and it really was going to sort itself I would be keeping the puppy until it was 100% fit and well.

I called my vet but they said they would need to check the pup them self..... apparently it will clear up by 12 weeks old.....

My personal view would be that the breeder should keep the puppy until it is fully fit. Of course others will have a different view

No I agree the breeder should keep the puppy until it has a full bill of health :-)

Flow murmurs generally do clear themselves up, and the breeder sounds reputable to have told you about it to begin with. Why not talk it over with them and see if they would be ok to hang onto him for a few more weeks to be sure it disappears, or come to some arrangement for what your options would be if you took him now and it didn't clear up.

You might have to be careful with regard to Pet Insurance.
As for some Pet Insurers they would exclude heart conditions as they'd say it was pre-existing.

To be fair more and more of these are picked up now that puppies are being vaccinated earlier.

Unless it is a breed with heart issues I wouldn't be worrying.
