I've heard that the only place to get an Anu Akita (The Large Size Akita) is Japan. Most americans, whether they are trainers or vets, barely know what they are and I haven't even seen any breeders. Is there a law, or any reason that Anu Akitas aren't in the U.S.? If they are in the U.S., why aren't they more popular, and where could I look into getting one?

Hi
I am no expert but I seem to remember that another name for the Jap. akita is the Japanese Akita Inu-is this the dog you are refering to?There are distinct diferences between the japanese type Akita and the Akita in the US but I would suggest you do some research on the net to find out any more.Sorry not to have been more help,Archer.

The reason I was confused was, I thought the largest Akita was the Japanese Inu. I'm very much for large dogs, and believe it was supposed to be around 150lbs top weight. I do know there's a difference between the two, but I was wondering why both kinds weren't in the US. Mainly wondering if there were laws, such as if I were to even consider going as far as Japan to get one.

Not necessarily laws...but someone has to bring them over. Probably no one had any interest. Size isn't the most important consideration for the export of a breed to a new land.

But beware of using the word "Ainu" or "Inu" loosely since it's a term for their native population who live mainly on the Northern most island and who are actually caucasion. To link a name of a people along with a dog is considered a gross insult in Asia. The population is not well regarded by most Japanese. Make sure you're working with an accurate breed name and not derogatory term for someone.
That actually happened to someone I know who was looking for a special type of working dog breed in Korea. Some guy thought it would be a cruel joke to send him into a neighboring village asking this question. Almost started a riot :( :(

toodles
