Can anyone tell me if a broken bone could be seen if you was using a scanning machine (the same thing to scan bitches in whelp)

No, I don't think so - the machines register different things - scans don't show up skeletons. Why? What's happened to your dog?

About 6 weeks ago the boys were playing and ran into the back of Jazz :( I took her to the vets and at 1st we thought it was muscle damage, then as it wasnt healing we took x-rays and concentrated on her hips and knee luckly nothing was found.
A week later we took more x-rays on her toes and feet and the vet says he can see a break in her 3 toe (rear foot)
its useless operating as its all ligaments and tendons so he has advised just waiting for it to heal.
It just doesnt seem to be healing i dont know if its me being impatient though.
I took her again christmas eve (she is having a weekly injection of some steriod for 4 weeks) and was told if it didnt heal they would amputate the toe...I dont want that if i can help it.
Any ideas or thoughts would be great.

Carolyn

Poor dog! I imagine it will take at least 6-8 weeks to heal on its own - as your vet says, the bones are too small to surgically "fix", and if you bandage the foot, the dressing will have to be changed every 2-3 days as it gets so sweaty and yucky otherwise!

I've been through a similar thing with one of my dogs - in August he wrenched a toe, and two days later an infection set in the nailbed. 8 weeks of various antibiotics followed - no luck. He was taken in to have the nail removed - no cure for the infection. So 10 weeks after the original injury he had to go in again and have the toe amputated. Now the hair has grown back it looks reasonable, and I can honestly say it doesn't bother him at all - he can run jest as well as before. His showing days are over though, and he'd qualified for Crufts several years running. Typical!!

Give your dog's toe lots of time to heal - don't rush it, and restrict the free running to help, and with luck she'll end up keeping all her digits!

Hi Jeangenie

You said his showing days were over, can i ask why?
was it because of the toe? my vet has said he can give me a letter for the KC explaining its an injury and they should give a letter of authority.

I am open to so many suggestions at the moment,it goes with out saying if the toe has to be amputated then i will get it done.....hip hip for insurance :)
I even brought one of those back massagers and thought i might try that, hopefully it may stimulate the blood to the injury.
How about swimming her as with the one leg not really being used it has lost its condition,it would be a proper
hydrotherapy pool?

Carolyn,

Please don't panic. My vet said exactly the same thing about my bitch Miranda when she broke a toe (Quite badly) on her front right foot. She was 5 when she did it.

She's now 8 and still intact with all toes. Her foot was strapped and I was given Metacam to give her daily, it healed beautifully. Since then she's had 2 litters of pups and she isn't shown now, not because the toe affected her movement but 28 pups doesn't do much good for the figure!!!!! ;)

Certainly I could get KC permission to show, as the vet will certify it was a genuine accident and not a malformed toe, but it's his front foot and is very noticeable when he stands in show pose! With the large classes we have in his breed (20 +), anything out of the ordinary will be penalised, so with the cost of show entries, time off etc, it's just not worth it! I'll have to hope someone wants his babies (he is smashing, and the easiest, sweetest house dog I've ever had) so that I can have a daughter!
