Hi, don't know if anyone can help, I know insurance companies don't pay for a dog to be spayed, but does anyone know if they are likely to pay out on an emergency spay. Our girl had an emergency spay on Christmas eve and it cost in total £1200 am now worried insurance wont pay out and as you can imagine a lot of money especially at this time of year. We had to pay the vet there and then and I actually didnt think I had the money in my bank account and I told the vet to go ahead and do it, thought I would be ending up in jail that night when I would be telling the vet I didnt have the money after the op. By the grace of god when I checked bank account I just had enough, but now I dont know if insurance will pay or not.  Dont get me wrong no amount of money can replace my baby but as I am out of work at the moment funds are low. Has anyone else been payed out on an emergency spay.
Many Thanks
Donna

Our insurance covered us, when my bitch had to be spayed due to a pyometra! It was around £300.

The vet did mention pyometra so I will keep my fingers crossed they pay out.
Thanks

An emergency spay is considered differently (and rightly so) to a routine elective spay. One is done to treat a medical condition and the other isn't.

She is doing really well at the moment, has to have her stitches out on wednesday. She has been enjoying and playing on the extra attention she has been getting and has been acting like a real baby lol. Feel it has been my fault as she is 6years now, we kept meaning to get her spayed but our last vet was reluctant to do it as she came into season every 3 to 4 months. The vet that done her recent op is a new one we took her to. Thank god we took her though as she had been off colour the day before and only reason I took her on the friday was because she didnt wag her tail and didnt eat breakfast, very unusual for her. Vet said she would have died if I had waited until the next day which would have been Christmas day. Best christmas present I got was getting her home, I was so worried about her as initially the vet said he had found tumours and thought he might have to put her to sleep if they had spread into her chest, but when he opened her up it was huge cysts and he was able to remove them and the uterus. She is one of my babies and I would have been devastated if she had died. But she is here lying beside me lapping up the attention.

One of my bitches had a season which continued for about 5 weeks - not heavy but noticeable.  She was put on antibiotics just incase of getting an infection and the vets suggested if I did not wish to breed from her to bring her in as soon as she stopped bleeding to be spayed.  My vet said they would put a claim form in for me to my insurance company as they may pay out and they did.  I hadn't even paid my first premium but had insurance for just over the 14days.  I wouldn't have chosen to have her spayed at that point but did not want to run the risk of a pyo.
