Topic Dog Boards / General / Staffy Advice Please

A taxi driver picked up a stray black Staffy pup a few days ago. Today the pup has been passed on to my friend, but she has a whole male (who is going to remain whole) thats been trying to jump the pup. She tried calling the phone number on the tag, but its been disconnected. I'm sure other phone calls will be made soon if not already to vets/rescue. She's a polite little pup, who can sit, drop, go potty on command etc. so she's obviously had some training.

Anyway, the main question: IF (big if, still hypothetical at this stage) I brought her home (I already have a 6.5 month old spayed female), what would I need to do? Apart from bringing the Staff to the vet for a checkup, are there any signs health wise I should watch out for before even bringing her home? I was thinking, assuming the pup was visibly healthy, I'd worm her and give flea treatment? Would it be crazy to have two young pups in the same house?

Also, can anyone give me a summary about Staffies? I'll research later today, but just basic things like how big do they grow (metric please), what their temprements are like in general... whatever else you can think of.

Thanks!

Just a thought but have you checked for a microchip yet? If she looks like she has had some training someone could be missing her dearly so I would check for a chip first before thinking about taking her home.

Good luck :)

Ooo.. I hadn't thought of that one. I saw today she has a council registration tag too.

I went to visit today and she's so very obedient. She jumps, sits, drops, fetches, stays, goes outside, so cool. She drools a lot but I guess she can't help that! Friend's going to keep her if they can't find the owners, but I hope the owners are found. She's definitely not one of those that are ill treated and neglected.

The drooling may be down to a dental problem - I don't know a lot about Staffies, but I didn't think they drooled a lot (well - not as much as Spaniels anyway <G>)

The drooling could be from teething, too :)

Hi
Please be carefull a staffy thats not use to being with other dogs can be aggresive towards other dogs so take care when talking into your home whith another dog ,contact your local staff breed club as they might had details of amissing pup, staffs are not a breed to drool so teething is more likely cause,

Well, I don't think the friend is looking too hard to find the owner. They haven't called anyone since they want to keep the dog. They said there's no tattoo in the ear so the dog isn't microchipped, and the date on the council registration tags expired in October so there's no point calling council. Apart from a bath she hasn't been checked out by a vet or anything and I don't think she will. She seems to get along fine with their male so it's good there isn't that aggression problem, although she did get territorial when I went over with my pup. My Nikki's not visiting That house anymore!

There's nothing I can say to them about it anymore really, but thanks for the input everyone. I learnt something at any rate!

Just because there's no tattoo in the ear doesn't mean the dog isn't microchipped. They are quite seperate identification methods! A chip can only be detected with a scanner, which a good vet will have.
