Hi All my girl didnt have a dead puppy she had eclampsia she stayed at the vets overnight and was given 2 calcium injections. The emergancy vet said last night not to let her feed pups again and to hand rear them. The vet who I have just spoke to when I picked her up said let her feed them. WhAT DO i DO?

you phone them back and ask to speak to vet for clarification.

This is not surprising, Eclampsia was the worry from the start when you mentioned shaking.

Bitch should continue to feed the pups but should have daily supplements of Calo Cal D (a specialy easily absorbed supplement) throughout lactation.

I would start the pups on weaning at around 18 days, or as soon as they show any interest in Mums food.  Once they are eating well the drain on Mum will be less.

The second Vet sounds like they know more about breeding and rearing.

When my bitch had eclampsia at 3 days the pups fed from her as normal, but she was supplemented with calcium syrup till weaning. She reared them all without loss.

Hi thanks brainless for your advice. She has 6 puppies which is massive for her breed and 3 of them are gigantic weighing 300g at 7 days. Her last litter weighed 554 at 8 weeks. He suggested bottle feeding the bigger ones twice a day so its less strain on her Do you agree with this?. He hasnt given me any calo cal d but I will ring up and ask. She had a calcium blood test was given 2ml calcium gluconate then given another blood test and a bit more calcium and ten another blood test this morning which showed they were ok shall I still ask for the calo cal d?

thanks again

How old are pups now if they have their eyes open you can start on weaning foods.  that is puppy milk thickened slightly using soaked and mashed puppy food.  At first it is just a half teaspoonful per meal for babies that small.

hi no they are only 1 week old. Just exceptionly large for the breed despite the fact mum is normal and dad is on the smaller side.

Well as long as you give the Calo Cal D every day while they nurse she should be fine.  I had this with a bitch I whelped for a friend who was very ill before pups were born, ending in a C section because her reserves were so depleted.

You can start therm waening in a week, but keep up the supplemetnting for the bitch until they are off her completely..
