Having done it several times :)))  Firstly which part of Sweden?  Size of puppy / adult?  When - i.e. what time of year will the dog be ready to travel to the UK?  Than I can advise.

OK.  I have done various ways.

Road - From the UK that would be a good 2 day long drive and in March the weather has to be taken into account.  I did import one from that area 3 years ago in winter and the breeder actually drove the dog down to Denmark to meet me therefore saving me the problem of driving to north of Stockholm in the snow.  There are also transport companies that will collect and deliver from that area and the quote I got back then was around £1,000.  I did pay the breeders travel cost, and adding in my own costs it came to around £600 and with fuel now it would be quite a bit more.

Flying - as Uppsala is easy access to Arlanda it is a good hub for flying dogs out of Sweden.  However most direct flights to the UK from there cannot accomodate a x large kennel (700) if you need one that big.  500 maybe OK.  But the dog if it needs a 700 could be flown direct to Amsterdam and you could collect the dog from there and an easy road trip back to the UK.  Flying can be cost effective when you figure out v road trip your time, fuel costs, hotels, wear and tear on the car.  I did fly one in to Amsterdam from Arlanda in a 700 crate for less than £500.  Amsterdam is a great hub for pet travel as they have good ground personel, and SAS and KLM both fly direct from Arlanda and are excellent in the care of the animals.

Ask the contact in Sweden if they know anyone who may be travelling south to Europe for shows any time in March.  They could bring the dog down with them and you could meet them.  I have done this both ways for people, taken dogs as far as Denmark to the WDS last year, taking one to Amsterdam next week and meeting someone from Finland to collect it.  And a friend in North Sweden brought a dog down to Germany for me.  People in Europe and Scandinavia do this far more than is inclined in the UK so it is not an unusual request.

Hope this helps.

hi can you tell me the best airline to use dog will be coming on her own from sweden
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.12.10 11:38 UTC
If she is coming direct to UK she can only come as Cargo on the airline and routes listed forThe PETS travel scheme.  http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/documents/eu-air.pdf

Sweden:
Gothenburg Landvetter London Heathrow:
                    Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS)

Stockholm (Arlanda) London Gatwick:
Sterling Airlines (suspended until further notice)

Stockholm (Arlanda) London Heathrow:
                  KLM Cargo (via Amsterdam),
                  Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS),
                  British Airways World Cargo

Stockholm (Arlanda) Manchester Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS)

Try to avoid a flying schedule that is not a direct flight into the UK.  Good as KLM is most hiccups in flying dog occur when they have a stop over, particularly changing airlines as well as planes.  Could you not use KLM into Amsterdam and collect the dog from Amsterdam then bring it in via Stena from the Hook of Holland.  That is the route many use from the USA bringing dogs over for Crufts.

If that is not possible I would use SAS direct flight into the UK.  Either to Manchester or Heathrow.  I would not use BA personally, their handling crew for animals are inept and I speak from experience of shipping both dogs and horses.

I would agree, a direct flight only.

Depending on what the ticket for a person would be you may be better flying the dog accompanied into Holland/Belgium and driving home via one of the ferry routes like I did with Inka.

Then again going just one way it may be cheaper to go Cargo, you really need to compare costs, but remember that Heathrow charge you an extra £230 on top of shipping costs for the use of their Animal Reception centre, handling, clearing customs etc.
