Health / Tibetan Terrier - loosing her coat, scratching and breaking
My Tibetan Terrier is 10 mths old and has been loosing loads of her coat for the past 6 weeks:-( I have been getting a bit worries and the advice I receive is conflicking!
At first I thought she was throwing her puppy coat, a huge pile on a daily basis for the last 4 wks when brushing her as well as finding clumps all over the house.
She does not have any bald spots, although her shoulders are really thin and she has a lot of brocken areas on her chest and ears.
It all started with her chewing her feet which I would distract her from doing, she has lost loads of coat when I groom her, she is also scratching a lot out. I dont have many problems with matts, which I was well warned about at this age.
I contact my breader and she thinks that I had her on too high a protein diet, I had changed her to adult food 4/5 weeks prior to this happening called Origins and it is 80% protein. She has now been put on James Wellbeloved Lamb and rice as she advised with no extra protein untill we resolve this. She thinks she is allergic to something and she is really itchie and it should settle in 2/3 weeks.
We had also been attending training classes and was using a lot of hot dog's, bits of chicken and ham for training, so there could have been something in the hotdogs that she was allergic too!
I thought her scratching stemed from one of her ears being itchie because she had scrached it sore
The groomer seemed to think I was over stressing and it is not always the case that TT's are non casting and he had never heard of too high a protein being bad and thought she was still a bit hormonal as she had had her first season 2 months ago! He also thought her scratching could be behavioural or habit.
I changed her diet about 2 wks ago and she is still ichie still loosing hair but not as much as she has already lost so muc.
She still has loads of energy and loves to run in the park and can give most dogs a run for their money.
Sorry this is so long winded but this is my first dog and I know I have to give the change of diet time but she had the most beautiful coat and now it looks awful.
Any advice welcome thanks.
I know how you feel, one of mine has done the same.
My breeder had a look at her and said it was hormonal, started straight after her season. You could also check for house dust mites, its the season or even mites whith her chewing her paws.
I give her, rasperryleaf tablets and evening primrose oil in the morning, so far so good and vrewers yeast to help the coat come back. poor baby had little chicken legs without her coat.
i didn't change my girls diet and hers is quite high protein.
Hope it helps.

Hotdogs are full of additives etc (just have a look on the side of the tin or packet to check out what they consist of). A prime suspect for allergies. If the ham you use for training is boiled ham in packets it too is likely to be full of nitrates as they are stored under a protective atmosphere to keep it fresh.I would definitely remove both of these items from the dog's diet ASAP.
Might be worth trying Yumega plus oil to add to food. Is available online plus PAH.
Dermacton products by Pet Nat are also worth a trying. You can get a soap for bathing plus a lotion and a cream.

I would agree - all ham contains saltpetre (nitrites) as it's what preserves it. There are plenty of things that make my dog scratch incessantly and it's taken a couple of years to really find out what triggers it. Oddly enough, CSJ Lamb & Rice made him scratch, but not raw lamb and not plain rice. If he nicks the cat food, he will scratch. He is fine with tripe, raw beef, pork & lamb though. Yet he can have (some) dog treats that look horrific on the packet and they don't affect him at all, possibly because a treat is only a small item or ten.... lol Luckily I have found some tripe chews that are made only from dried tripe and starch, these are more than just good for training!
Thank you so so much for your replys.
I wouldn't eat hotdogs myself and wasn't that keen on giving them so they have now been removed. The ham I did not think about as it was good quality cold meat - I will also remove this. I am tempted to feed her myself but worry about it being a balanced diet as I dont know ratios protein-veg-carb etc The breader had said they love root veg so on xmas day she got a roasted carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoe and turnip and loved it.
Do I stick with the diet and allow it time or should I have her at the vet!
She has stopped chewing her paws, still scratching, mostly shoulders but not as much. A fellow dog walker said they stopped using the JWL lamb and rice and use the JWL lamb and Veg as her dog had skin probs and it was the rice (grain) that her vet thought was causing it? She is not that keen on her dried food at the moment but I am sticking with it as I dont want a fussy eater but might change it to the lamb and veg.
Thanks again - I know its either hormonal or diet but which, time will tell! K
When I went to puppy training they used dried chicken and dried liver, venison etc I will deff give the tripe a try. I have changed to diff training class, I do enjoy this one, we have learned such a lot but boy they use a load of hotdogs which I will deff stop. Class has been off for 3 weeks so she hasn't had any as I dont use them in the house. Thanks again, fingers crossed her lovely coat comes back.

my TT started itching and loosing some hair a few months ago but thankfully i have now solved the problem. i worked out she was allergic to air freshener and so i never use any now. we were trying to sell our house so i was using a lot of nice smelling stuff, anyway after going to the vets and having a few different treatments it was all down to me spraying things. i have used a shampoo from the vets to settle it down and antibiotics where she broke the skin from scratching and now she's back to nomal and i've had no probems since.

Oh yes some f the worst things for kicking off reactions are Shake and Vac and Febreze.

your so right, thats just what i was using. thankfully i worked out what it was but i expect there's a lot of people out there who use these and don't know thats whats effecting their dogs skin.
I dont use these, although perfume and aftershaves can be a bit on the strong side at times in this house, girls prepairing for boyfriend visits!!!
I have a vet appoint this afternoon just to see what he says, its either, food related or hormonal I think - will let you know what he says. Thanks for everyones advise it has been most helpful.

Daisy has had the same problem for a year. We were told she had a food allergy. So tried Hills ZD this caused her to become worse. She is now on Orijen and has been bathed in Nizoral once and is sprinkled on her arm pits once a day with athletes foot powder and three weeks in she is clear of itching. Her skin is still a little bit black on her legs but this will take time. It looks lke she had a yeast infection Malasezzia Dermatitis. She is a changed little dog.
I have a working line beardie who has similar problems every May/June/July. He ends up looking scraggy around his shoulders and across his chest then his legs are fine so he looks like he is wearing huge moon boots sticking out from scrawny shoulders!
I find huge clumps of hair all over the carpets and every time he scratches out come more.
For the first two years it happened I went to the vets and spent a fortune on creams and shampoo - Malaseb, but it only eased but did not solve the problem.
Then I put him on Yumega and Dermacton and he was fine! I always make sure I am stocked up with both in Spring!

flash is also a culprit.

you could try wafcol salmon and potato to rule out the food allergy.
Have you tried this with your dos? How long will you do this?

one of my dogs is on Wafcol salmon and potato after becoming sensative to Arden Grange which is what I feed my other dogs. She is fine on it .
