I am looking to import a puppy/dog from Hungary - can someone please explain exactly how this is done, any experiences good/bad welcomed :-)

Hi,

I have imported three dogs from Hungary, all by PETS (Pet Passport Scheme) and have had no real problems. If you decide to do it this way I am happy to answer any question.
One thing I would point out is that if you pick up the puppy then you will need to bear in mind what time of year that will be as Hungary can get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer.
Jeff.

Briefly:

Assuming they are a country covered by the PETS travel scheme the earliest you Will be able to bring pup in would be at 10 months of age.

Pup will first have to be Microchipped, then Vaccinated for Rabies, then blood tested (depending on vaccine used between 21 and 30 days after).

If the blood titre comes back at a high enough level then the dog is eligible to enter the UK 6 months after the blood sample was taken that gave a satisfactory titre.

An EU  Pet Passport needs to be completed.

The dog when being imported will have to be wormed for Tape Worm using a product containing Praziquantel, and treated for ticks using a Licensed product for this.

This has to be done more than 24 hours but less than 48 hours before checking in for travel to UK on the Ferry route, channel tunnel or the Approved Airline/route.

Thanks Barbara/Jeff, do you do all paperwork for PP this end or is it done in country of origin? (sorry if thats a stupid question!) Is rabies vacc done at 12wks? I worry about titres because of an experience I had with parvo vacc in one of my last litter, if they fail it would add a couple of months? Angela

The breeder will have to get it done as it requires scanning and seeing the animal at each part of the process to confirm identity.

I would nursemaid them though each stage to make sure it is done correctly.

Hello Anworth,

Assuming you've done the' groundwork' and know what you are looking for in the  puppy  and checked out the breeder, there will be no problem importing from Hungary . I have lived in the country and imported a dog I bought while living there. I found the vets in Budapest absolutely excellent and  they are used to dealing with pet passports. As in the UK, the puppy will have to be vaccinated in the usual way and microchipped . At 3 months of age puppy can have Rabies Vaccine which can be repeated 14 days later. I would recommend 2 doses of the vaccine having had 2 dogs ( father and daughter ) fail the bloodtest after only one dose. 28 days after the vaccination a blood sample is taken for testing the effectiveness of the vaccine and 6 monthe from the date of the bloodtest ,if satisfactory, the puppy /young dog can enter the UK. Of course, you also need to have puppy treated for parasites 24-48 hours before embarkation ( boat or plane) to enter the UK. The whole process takes about 10 months. There are a nuber of Pet Travel  companies I could recommend if you need help with the travel arrangements but I guess I'm not allowed to mention them on the site ! That would be advertising.

Good Luck !

Hello again,
Sorry about the typos in my earlier post.
I should have mentioned that Hungary is of course a member of the EU and therefore part of the Pet Travel Scheme.
I assume you will wish to register puppy with the UKKC so you will need to have the Hungarian registration document transferred to you ( by breeder) and a 5 generation pedigree . The UKKC have an import to the register form ( can't remember the form number) which you can download from their web site. I think the fee is around 40 quid. You will then have the puppy registered with the Kennel club in the normal way.

I brought one in just before Christmas from there and it was brought down to Belgium and the kennels in Belgium brought it to the shuttle. Boarded one just around 7am was back in the UK at 12.30pm very straight forward.
