Topic Dog Boards / Health / Metamucil for anal gland problems

Hi All

Just been to the vets again for robbies anal glands and the vet suggested metamucil to put onto his food as some dogs have had good results with this, we tried bran but it didn't seem to work at all, he said you can get it anywhere but i have just looked on line and cannot find anywhere that sells it. Does anybody on here know where i can get this from, i am not sure if a normal chemist would sell it, i assumed that vets would have it but they don't stock it.

Thanks

I've just googled "metamucil" and there are loads of online stockists.

Edited: they seem to be US sites.

If it is psyllium husks I'm sure there are UK stockists such as Holland and Barrett (http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/categories.asp?cid=309&searchterm=psyllium&rdcnt=1)

Hilton herbs do psyllium husk as well (http://www.hiltonherbs.com/products/psyllium-planntaago-husks/270)

Dorwest have psyllium in their Keeper's Mix (http://www.dorwest.com/Catalogue/Dietary-Supplements/Keepers-Mix)

I think "metamucil" is just a brand name.

Thanks for that, have you ever heard this helping anal gland problems? I am willing to try anything before having to think about the op as my vet is not keen on robbie having this done and i must admit neither am i but keep having to have them emptied every 9 days or so is not really fair on robbie at all.

I've not heard whether it would help with anal gland problems but it would be worth trying, especially as your Vet seems to think it has helped others with the problem. It may be worth contacting Hilton Herbs or Dorwest to see if they know more, I've found both very helpful in the past.
