This question really relates to those who breed or who have recently had a puppy or are well into the breed.

I've been doing some research on many different lines of the breed and it appears from my checks that really only hips are done.

From checking through some of the breed clubs it seems that they recommend elbows to be done too and also heart testing. Now from what I know about heart testing is that its about £500-£600 a pop unless the breed club do a subsidy on it.

Can those in the breed just elaborate what is the norm with regards health testing and if the breed clubs are recommending more then why aren't breeders doing them or the breed clubs assisting?

From the price quoted I think you mean a Holter monitor to check for cardiomyopathy.
The rott breeders I know havent done this and only test hips and elbows.

This is what they mention for one of the breed clubs:
AORTIC STENOSIS

This is due to a partial obstruction to the flow of blood as it leaves the left side of the heart (the left ventricle) through the main blood vessel (the aorta) that carries blood to the rest of the body. Due to the obstruction the heart must work harder to pump adequate blood. Clinical signs depend on the degree of the narrowing. Some puppies have what are called "innocent" murmers which disappear. Others need further investigation.

There are tests for this condition. Auscultation (stethoscope) ECG, and more extensive investigations such as Doppler echocardiography and chest x-rays. These should be carried out by qualified Cardiologists (e.g. SAC veterinary surgeons) who can issue a certificate. In its mildest form there are no problems for the dog, but it may still be passed on to its offspring.

Recommendation is that no affected animals are used for breeding.

Tests for Aortic Stenosis are Auscultation ( simple listening with stethoscope) generally free at breed club shows and Ultrasound which cost much less than £500-600 quoted- the consultant cardiologist I use charges me £160 per dog.

The charge you quoted in your original post looked like 24 holter test for CM.

Most decent breeders are hip and elbow scoring and eye testing and a few are heart testing.
The heart testing costs about £47 for an adult but they do a different rate for litters of pups,I just cant find the details.

Thats lot better. Is it done yearly or once in the lifetime of a dog? How often to the breed clubs run these? Is it a big problem in the breed?
With regards eye testing, is it a basic eye test from a specialist or is there something they should be testing for, again is there any problems in the breed with eyes? I am aware there is a bit of a problem with entropian.

Rotties are on the A Schedule for eye testing under the KC/BVA scheme for MRD - Multifocal retinal dysplasia and the B Schedule for  MOD, PPM -  Multiocular defects and Persistent pupillary membrane

Results of examinations for conditions on Schedule A are recorded on the Kennel Club registration database. Results are also published in the KC Breed Records Supplement and appear on registration documents. The exception to this is MRD affected results (apart from Rottweilers which will list unaffected as well as affected as this is the only eye condition which these breeds are examined for under the scheme) which are maintained on an 'Open Register'; copies of which are available free of charge upon request.

Schedule B is for conditions that are under investigation.

Eye tests are normally done annually however I am not sure if any of the above can be optigen tested (eg once only)?

You do not have to wait for a breed club to organise an eye testing session there are lots of group sessions held all over the UK but many people have their dogs routinely checked via their own vet or one near them.

In my breed AS testing sessions are regularly organised by breed clubs (usually held in conjunction with a show) and the last one I had tested around three months ago cost me £12.

Most of the breed clubs recommend hips, the bva means for rotts is 12 i think but elbows are being frequently now,as are eyes which as stated is done on an annual basis either at some shows. our vet waits till he has about ten then the specialist comes and tests there eyes, which is non invasive and quick,some are testing hearts which i believe the english clubs have started to do at their shows.
