Topic Dog Boards / General / Merle chihuahuas in UK, history

Hi, new member here. Am trying to trace history of merle Chihuahuas in UK from first introduction. Am not a breeder, merely interested in tracing a pedigree. (I've kept various toy breeds most of my life, purely as companions, and have always enjoyed tracing their pedigrees back just for interest's sake - it's always fascinating to learn the background.)

I know there were three imports from America and that some of their offspring were registered with KC before the colour was made a disqualifying fault, and I have found the list of KC-registered dogs with merle in their pedigree that is on the British Chihuahua Club website. But I cannot discover the date of import/s or the names of the merle imports, and should be very grateful if anyone could let me have this information. I have recently added a merle Chi-cross (a very handsome dog with a wonderful temperament) to my little pack of dogs. I have met his mother (not a Chi), have seen several photos of his sire (blue merle smoothcoat Chi) and have a copy of the sire's pedigree - but, having looked up the names on this pedigree, it doesn't seem to be remotely correct. The names on it are mis-spellings of the names of actual dogs which do appear in American merle pedigrees, but scattered about in pretty random order. I am sure the owner of the sire passed on this pedigree in good faith believing it to be correct, and don't want to upset her with any queries until I have a bit more information. At the moment I think most of the dogs on this "pedigree" are still in America, but if I can tie in even one of the names to one of the UK imports that will give me a starting point.

Sorry, this will seem an awfully time-wasting exercise to anyone except pedigree-tracing addicts, especially since my little merle boy will not be bred from and is not even a pure Chihuahua, but any help would be much appreciated.

In all honesty furriefriends, the responsible Chi people will not have had any involvement with merles.  :-)

The people breeding them are advertising, and pushing "RARE" as the sales pitch.  I won't go on - you've heard it all before!  :-)

I think you'd be best contacting the British Chihuahua Club as they are very open about the merle chi's (hence the public database) and im sure would be more than happy to help if they have the information available.

I know the kennel that the merle dogs have come from, they are not considered particularly reputable as far as I have heard, but maybe contact them also?

Well hello stranger, fancy seeing you here! Warning, ADDICTIVE LOL. Don't get anything done when you spend all day on CD. I have done for over 7 years now. :) The post you've replied to is almost 2 years old though so you're not very likely to get a reply, you can always PM the original poster if they are still a member.

Hi Ingucheeni. This is Pekehour under a new name, on account of having having lost my password and changed e-mail address, so have re-registered from the start. Have forgotten how to PM too! But intrigued to see a response on this subject and would love to hear from you.

The little merle Chi cross that sparked off the topic is now nearly two years old and has grown up to look like a cross between a floor-mop and a jumping bean. We think he's wonderful.
