Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Prolonged Season....

Hope someone may be able to advise on this problem. I have a 7 year old entire bitch, her first season with me (I've had her just less than 2 years) was slightly longer than normal (it lasted about five weeks) Didnt think much of it as her next one was completely normal. She's now in her third season with me and and it's been going on now for almost twelve weeks. I took her to see the vet and he advised leaving it another few weeks to see if she comes out herself as it's not really affecting her in any way. It's suspected she has cystic ovaries and will need a spay however my vet is very against spaying whilst she's in season. This is where I need advice. My vet said if she's still in season in a few weeks time he thinks that giving her the drug used to abort unwanted pups (sorry but I've forgotten the name of it) will kickstart her hormones into going back to normal and bring her out. Does anyone have any experience of this? Apparently it's not licensed for that specific use which is somewhat worrying, I have no idea what the possible side effects or complications might arise from it's use but on the other hand I don't know what else can be done if she won't come out of season. Obviously I'm hoping it won't come down to this but I want to be prepared in case this is something I may need to consider.

I'm not too sure but I think it restarts the season. And I think the main side effect is Pyometra.

Unfortunately I had to use the injection about 9 years ago and it did restart the season all over again. I have no idea if there is a new jab or if things have moved on but I would query this. The poor girl must be in turmoil, hormones are horrid things and to go on so long must be hard for all of you. I hope you get it sorted.

The one that restarts the seasons is Delvesteron

This was unlikely to have been Alizin, but the older drugs, which some vets are still using as they aren't up to date with the newer available option of Alizin.

So it is important to know WHAT injection was given.

Thank you for the replies.
Obviously the best thing that could happen is that she comes out of season herself, she has been given another few weeks to see if that happens and if not I guess my next step is to find out the name of the injection so I am better prepared to make a decision. I don't like the sound of the one which starts the season again, that is the last thing she needs right now and I'd be concerned that it might be another prolonged one rather than a normal one. The possibility of pyometra is also worrying as then that means potentially spaying her whilst she is in season and also sick. She is a Saluki and the breed is very sensitive to drugs/GA's so ideally I want her spay done at the right time to minimize the risks.
No, it's not been the greatest of times but surprisingly it does not seem to be affecting her in any obvious way, she is still her usual happy self and is acting normal in every way. I think it is driving me crazy more than it is her!

I know its not the same issue but our vets used Alizin to treat Pyometra when our girl got it 3 weeks after being mated.  It wasn't licenced for that particular use but, along with ABs, it worked, and quite quickly too.  Many other vets would just have spayed at that point as she was very ill.  It didn't bring her right back in season again but she did come in a month early the next time she was in season. (after 3 months rather than the usual 4!). I don't know if this is the drug that would stop a season though.  Good luck with your girl.

I asked about anything to stop my Goldies seasons as she was getting UTI's every time.  My vet said that he could give her one but the risk was Pyro'.

I'd probably try what your vet has said after i read Two sox's post.  It could be worth the risk as it can't be nice for you girl to be in that situation.  Is there anything he can give to bost her hormones that deal with it.  I know its all down to hormone rise/falls.

Just thought I'd give a quick update. She didn't come out of season in the extra time the vet gave her. Took her back in today and saw a different vet who shared my concerns about using the hormone shot on her. The outcome is that she is booked in for a spay next week. I am so worried as I know spaying an in season bitch is not the best of things that could happen but there doesn't seem to be any options left. Just hope she gets through it no problem.

I was worried when spaying my girl as she was having odd seasons but then I thought about dogs that are taken into shelters and then spayed, no one knows when they were last in season. Try to think positive, good luck.

We had exactly the same with my bulldog Truly, she came into season and was in season for about 45 days,we had her tested to see if she had ovulated (we werent breeding her but I was advised to get it done,Larry at Idexx bless him did it for nothing) turned out she had cysts on her ovaries and we had her spayed while in season and she was fine and she was 6 at the time so no spring chicken, she is fine now at 8 and still a devil so try not to worry.
