Topic Other Boards / Foo / Keeping vetbed soft and fluffy
- By suejaw Date 05.12.10 10:22 UTC
I've recently ordered lots of new vetbed with the non slip backing. Just put a piece in the wash and its lost all its fluffiness and gone lumpy like. I've washed it as specified on the website.. 40 degrees wash with bio liquid.

Is there anything I can do to stop this? I'm not wanting to put the rest in the wash now. All mine in the past have done this..
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.12.10 10:27 UTC
I've never known any make to not do that after washing. It still wicks away moisture as before though.
- By chaumsong Date 05.12.10 10:35 UTC
They do all do this, but they're still comfy and dry and last forever. If you could be bothered I suppose you could brush it with a slicker brush :-)
- By suejaw Date 05.12.10 10:43 UTC
Thanks guys.. Yeah I agree they still do a good job, they just don't look as good.
No i'm not going to be brushing them with a slicker, lol...
I just miss the softness of them when new.

Any one tried those dryer balls for this?

I nearly bought some yesterday but thought I may not like the noise.

The only way to return it to prewashing fluffiness is to comb it, bit pointless really.  I admit to doing it when I first had it ;)

I've tried a couple of different makes, as well as the original, and profleece.

I haven't found one that doesn't go flat.
- By furriefriends Date 05.12.10 18:02 UTC
Yep I hate that too , great stuff but looks lumpy after washing and no I am not that obsessed to start combing it.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 05.12.10 18:09 UTC
I only ever did it to a piece I used as a rug.

I bought some Burgundy coloured vet bed at LKA last year and it's still fluffy after washing

It also SHEDS like you wouldn't believe, I have burgundy tumble-weed all through the house even now :(    It was the green-backed stuff and looked and felt like every other vet bed I've ever bought, but the green backing came off quickly.

In future I'll stick to the grey or white stuff - far better, even though it mats after washing.

It CAN be done, and I did it for many years with the ones I used for queens giving birth, but it was such hard work I gave up. You have to brush it very, very carefully with a slicker brush whilst wet, not tumble dry it, then it stays like new for as long as you keep it up. Just one wash with letting it dry without brushing and it goes the way of the rest of them.

Now that's extreme dedication! :)

Lol with the number of vet bed pieces I have it would take all my time to keep them that way
I'd have no time for work, hehehe

LOL... it's what you do when you have cats.... they can be extremely particular ;)

Thanks for the tip about the green-backed, Dill - wish I'd seen that last week as I've just ordered a large piece of that, in blue, which should arrive tomorrow :(

Sue I am begining to worry about you!!! I feel sure your boys won't care if it has been combed or not, they will still sleep on it.
We are all for lumpy vet bed in this house...9 times out of 10 they dig it all out of the beds and sleep on the plastic anyway!
It is -12 in my garden at the moment...!!! :0 :0

LOL is this like ironing socks :)

LOL is this like ironing socks :-)

To be honest the vetbed only truly works as it should if it is done. (I.e. if it gets lumpy it will not stay dry on top to the same extent.)

> Sue I am begining to worry about you!!!

Ha ha... I just wanted to know if I was doing something wrong, but there is no way i'm going down the road of combing/bushing wet vetbed!!! lol... I use it as a rug and back door mat and thought it would be nice to keep if fluffy for me :-D

But like JAY15 said its down the realms of ironing socks...
- By qwerty Date 06.12.10 11:36 UTC
The stuff i have gets washed and tumble dried weekly and it looks and feels exactly the same as brand new...wonder what im doing differently!!!

My ex-sister in law used to iron my brothers underpants!!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 06.12.10 12:25 UTC
Maybe it's the tumble drying, I would never be so extravagant as to tumble dry my won clothes let alone the dogs bedding.

Clothes airer by the radiator or line in summer. ;)

He He she's not an X cause he was in them at the time ! was she.
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 06.12.10 14:32 UTC
With pups I've got 3 pieces of 6'x4' on the go at the moment, too big for my domestic washer. I just assumed my big top loader machine beats the hell out of it in the wash and tumble drying doesn't improve it.

In summer I have been known to use a slicker brush on vetbed hanging on the line.

My mum still irons pants, socks & teatowels. Sadly I haven't inherited that gene.

No, no WolfieStruppi! You need to rejoice in your freedom to spend time out walking with dogs, and all the fun things that there's time for when you're not sacrificing it to iron underwear or dish towels. If you really feel you need to press these things you could lie them flat under the vetbed and get the dogs to do the work...
- By furriefriends Date 06.12.10 16:15 UTC
Trouble with vet bed in this house the dogs nibble it once it has gone lumpy. gave up ompletley with my flat coat I was worried she would choke herself. Yes I tumble dry dogs stuff and ours I cant stand crispy undies and towels. I also iron teatowels but have given up at last with socks and pants ever since I had kids and worked. Standards have dropped in this house !
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 06.12.10 16:40 UTC

Why does laundry go crispy? I've never had that happen.
- By furriefriends Date 06.12.10 17:43 UTC
well I suppose in comparison to soft fluffy laundry when it has been tumbled
- By JAY15 [gb] Date 06.12.10 18:27 UTC
ahh..that's why it's never happened, I am a closet tumbledryer fan myself.
- By furriefriends Date 06.12.10 19:13 UTC
oh yes not good when the towels cant go in the tumble dryer lol
- By MsTemeraire Date 09.12.10 20:12 UTC
What exactly IS it about vetbed anyway....?
My new piece arrived today - it's the first I've bought for my dog, he's never seen it before. I laid it on the living room floor to check size, and doglet wandered over and straightaway plonked himself in the middle of it! It's now in his usual bed space, but 15 mins ago my cat noticed it, and has been sitting there kneading it wearing an expression of ecstasy ever since.
(I admit I forgot my cat might like it too, now I am going to have to order some more for her!)
