Hello I need a little advice.

My bitch is due to whelp around 22 December. I have been advised by my vet to give her an injection of Oxytocin 12 hours after whelping in order to clear her out and aid milk flow (poor record of milk production). The vet said that if by Christmas eve she hadn't whelped he would sell me a bottle of Oxtocin to inject her myself to avoid me having to go to the out of hours on Christmas day/Boxing Day.  I'm a little worried at the thought of injecting her myself as I have heard of many stories where a bitch has died after having Oxytocin. I am only a beginner in the breeding world (3rd litter).

Would you inject your own bitch or just take her to the out of hours in the next town?

would probably inject myself, but, to be fair, I'm pretty experienced in injecting animals.

If you have only had a couple of litters I would advise you NOT to try.  I don't ever routinely give a bitch oxytocin "to clear her out" and I would just give your girl chance to get the milk flow in.  I have 2 toy breeds (one the same as you) and I often find that it takes a good 12 hours or more for flow to get going.  Remember, with lactation, it's the sucking that stimulates, and with the size of pups that we get, it isn't abnormal for things to be a little slow.

In 30 years of breeding I have never had a bitch given Oxytocin after whelping.  To suggest that a novice does it on their own is somewhat irresponsible. :(
Do you have an experienced mentor near to you who would be happy to support you over the Christmas period?  Sometimes just talking over situations with someone who has been there before cam help... :)

Are owners allowed to inject their own animals?
Is there no restriction on who can handle/administer a drug?

I would be most unhappy if my vet said this to me, smacks of them not wanting to be bothered on a holiday!

I think it depends on the individual. If a breeder is experienced and confident and is aware of when oxytocin can be used safely, then there is no reason for them not to administer it themselves. I certainly like to have a bottle in the fridge, as my vet is 40 minutes away and it can save a visit to him on an icy night, if a quick injection of oxytocin is all that is required.
However, if you are not happy about giving it and don't have an experienced breeder that you can call on, then I wouldn't suggest that you give it yourself.
